Lanning has spent over 25 years representing seamen in plaintiff maritime cases arising throughout the North Pacific; including waters off Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California and Russia. In addition to practicing maritime law, Lanning owned and operated his own commercial fishing vessel in the Alaska commercial salmon fishery.
Lanning has been involved in over a thousand maritime matters involving serious vessel injury and death claims covering all aspects of the maritime industry; from commercial fishing, tug and barge, cargo, off-shore supply, oil tanker, and cruise ship industries, to maritime worker and longshore situations. Lanning has represented family members in maritime wrongful death claims involving the vessels OCEANIC, LIN J, SECOND CHANCE, AMBER DAWN, ALEUTIAN VENTURE, ARCTIC ROSE, DORTHY L, STAR RUBY, SAM B, and ADVANTAGE.
Lanning is licensed in all Alaska and Washington State and Federal Courts, served on the Federal Admiralty Law Rules Committee in helping redraft the Alaska Federal Court Local Admiralty Rules, and presently serves on the Executive Committee of the Admiralty Section of the Alaska Bar Association.
Lanning successfully argued the Alaska Supreme Court case Nunez v. American Seafoods, which protected the rights of seamen to bring their claims in Alaska courts. Lanning has spoken at many maritime law education seminars in both Alaska and Washington.
