<p class="has-small-font-size">There isn’t a traditional meal for New Year’s Day, yet there are <a href="https://www.history.com/news/new-years-food-traditions" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">foods thought to bring good luck and a happy new year</a>. For example, bottles of champagne pop the world over on New Year’s Eve. </p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Good luck foods include pretzels, black-eyed peas, pickled herring, lentils, soba noodles, tamales, king cake, and a dish called hoppin’ john. Similarly, an Italian New Year’s Eve feasts can mean multiple courses served over several hours. For instance, one dish said to bring especially good luck is lentils. Shaped like a coin, lentils are symbol of prosperity. </p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Research from the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more than twelve thousand children 19 and younger die each year from preventable accidents. Safety at home means keeping homes safer for children of all ages.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-keep-kids-safe"><strong>Keep Kids Safe</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Children, especially younger children, get hurt more often because they are smaller and less aware of danger. They are also curious and get hurt in ways that adults would not. Safety at home includes awareness of the most common causes of child injuries will help stop accidents and keep your child safer.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">One of the most common accidents that hurt children is falling. Increase safety at home and prevent falls by supervising play activity. Do not let children play on furniture or near open windows. To protect particularly young children, block stairways with safety gates. Do not use baby walkers near stairs.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Children of all ages can choke on food. Some foods, such as hot dogs, hard candies and nuts are responsible for approximately 40% of choking deaths. Help prevent choking by monitoring what your child eats. Cut food into smaller bites when possible.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size"><em><strong>Preventing the most common burn injuries improves safety at home. </strong>Cook on back burners of the stove&nbsp;and turn handles backward, so children cannot pull or knock over pots</em></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-traveling-over-the-holidays"><strong>Traveling Over The Holidays</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Never post your travel plans online. Sharing your travel details makes you susceptible to intruders in your absence. Even if you feel that your online posts are private. Home safety includes protecting your privacy. Avoid becoming a victim by sharing specific details on the internet – <em>always </em> practice <a href="/blog/national-safer-internet-day" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Internet Safety</a>.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Notify a neighbor of your travel plans. The best person to increase home safety and keep an eye on your house is a person living close to you who sees your home throughout the day. Provide good contact information to your neighbor so they can easily reach you in case of emergency.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Do not make your home look appealing to a criminal. Many crimes against home safety occur because of opportunity. If you know that you will be away for extended times, do not order packages that will sit on your door step for days. Ask a friend or neighbor to grab your mail so that your mailbox is not over filling. The <a href="https://www.usps.com/manage/hold-mail.htm">post office will also hold mail</a> while you are traveling as a good way to avoid packages being stolen.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-staying-home-over-the-holidays"><strong><a href="/blog/safety-at-home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Staying Home Over The Holidays</a></strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Staying home with family or having visitors at your home are also perfect ways to spend the holiday season. It is still important to implement home safety precautions and not make yourself a target.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Do not put your tree in front of an open window with presents all around. Presents under the tree look nice. They also attract attention. Hide presents in safe locations until you plan to actually open them up. Burglars may drive by, see a tree in the window with presents surrounding it and make your home a target while you are away.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Finally, home safety includes checking the exterior of your home frequently. Walk around your home to look for oddities, lock all exterior doors before leaving home, and ensure your garage door is closed every night.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-christmas-lights-and-home-safety"><strong>Christmas Lights And Home Safety</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Fire hazards increase during the holidays.&nbsp;Before you string lights on the house or the tree, be sure to inspect the strands for frayed cords or cracked lamps. To&nbsp;prevent an accidental fire, replace any broken lamps, and throw away strands with frayed cords.</p>

<li class="has-small-font-size"><strong>Sharp Points/Edges:</strong>&nbsp;Inspect for sharp edges or parts that can fly off.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size"><strong>Cords & Strings:</strong>&nbsp;Steer clear of toys with ropes, cords, or strings longer than 12 inches for young children.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size"><strong>Batteries & Magnets:</strong>&nbsp;Be cautious with button batteries and small, powerful magnets, which are dangerous if swallowed.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size"><strong>Material & Durability:</strong>&nbsp;Look for sturdy toys and avoid materials with lead or harmful chemicals, checking for safety seals like ASTM.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size"><strong>Protective Gear:</strong>&nbsp;Gift sports equipment with the necessary helmet and pads.</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-further-gift-considerations"><strong>Further Gift Considerations</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size"><strong>This holiday season (and beyond), please consider the following Toy Safety guidelines:</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Inspect all toys before purchasing. Avoid those that shoot or include parts that fly off. Avoid toys with sharp edges or points. Toys should be sturdy enough to withstand impact without breaking, being crushed, or being pulled apart easily.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Be diligent about inspecting toys your child has received. Check recommended age, skill level, and developmental appropriateness before gifting.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Look for labels that assure you the toys have passed a safety inspection – “ATSM” means the toy has met the American Society for Testing and Materials standards.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Gifts of sports equipment should always be accompanied by protective gear (give a helmet with the skateboard)</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Keep kids safe from lead in toys by: Educating yourself about lead exposure from toys, symptoms of lead poisoning, and what kinds of toys have been recalled; being aware that old toys may be more likely to contain lead in the paint; having your children wash their hands frequently and calling your doctor if you suspect your child has been exposed to lead. <li class="has-small-font-size">Give only crayons and markers labeled <strong><em>nontoxic</em></strong>.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size"><strong>Do NOT</strong> give toys with ropes and cords or heating elements.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size"><strong>Do NOT</strong> give toys with small parts (including magnets and “button” batteries which can cause serious injury or death if ingested) to young children as they tend to put things in their mouths, increasing the risk of choking. If the piece can fit inside a toilet paper roll, it is not appropriate for kids under age three.</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Halloweekend Safety – October 31st is Halloween. While the modern tradition of Halloween is more about dressing up in costumes and collecting candy, Halloween originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain when people lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off spirits.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-samhain-throughout-the-years"><strong>Samhain Throughout the Years</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">By 43 AD, the Roman Empire had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. Eventually, two festivals of Roman origin ended up combined with the traditional Celtic Samhain. The first Roman festival, known as Feralia, was a day in late October when Romans commemorated the passing of the dead. The second, a day honoring Pomona – the Roman goddess of fruit and trees – is linked to the tradition of bobbing for apples. Pomona’s symbol is the apple.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">On May 13, 609 AD, Pope Boniface IV dedicated the Pantheon in Rome in honor of all Christian martyrs, ultimately establishing The Catholic feast of All Martyrs Day. Pope Gregory III later expanded the festival to include saints moving the observance from the month of May to November 1st. When Christianity’s influence spread into Celtic lands, its traditions and rites slowly blended with and supplanted the older Celtic traditions and rites.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">In 1000 AD, the Church made November 2nd All Souls’ Day – a day to honor the dead. This was very similar to the ancient Samhain. Eventually, the holiday Samhain night became All-Hallows Eve  which evolved to Halloween.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-halloweekend-celebrations"><strong>Halloweekend Celebrations</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Commonly, Americans will celebrate Halloween with parties and get togethers. When Halloween falls on a Friday, the weekend or on a Monday, colloquially, this has come to be known has Halloweekend. &nbsp;Check your local area for events that may be right for you and your family.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-celebrate-a-safe-and-happy-halloween"><strong>Celebrate A Safe and Happy Halloween</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Above all, if you celebrate Halloween this year, make sure you do so safely. The best Halloween is a safe Halloween. Check your local weather reports and dress for the weather. When celebrating Halloweekend outdoors, use reflective gear and bring layers to keep out the cold. </p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">As we close out <a href="/blog/halloween-safety-month" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Halloween Safety Month</a>, use caution while Trick-or-Treating: paying attention to street signs and watching traffic before crossing intersections. Ensure your children trick-or-treat in areas you know and utilize the buddy system. <a href="/blog/halloween-pedestrians" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Halloween Pedestrians</a>: be on alert and wear lights, glowsticks, and reflective material so you are visible. Drivers: watch for pedestrians, use extra caution and slow down.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size"><strong>Remember these basics for a safer Halloweekend</strong>:</p>

<li class="has-small-font-size">At parties or any sort of get together, observe and practice fire safety;</li>

Children are <a href="https://www.safekids.org/be-safe-be-seen-halloween" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more than twice as likely </a>to be <a href="https://www.nsc.org/home-safety/tools-resources/seasonal-safety/autumn/halloween" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other night of the year.</a> Use caution this Halloween and <a href="/blog/halloweekend-safety" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Halloweekend</a> to keep roads safe for everyone.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-pedestrians-on-halloween"><strong>Pedestrians On Halloween</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Be as predictable as possible to make it easier for drivers to see pedestrians on Halloween. Stay on sidewalks when available and if there is no sidewalk, walk facing oncoming traffic and as far from traffic as possible.&nbsp;Follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals. Watch for cars entering or exiting driveways or backing up in parking lots. Stay aware of your surroundings and do not be distracted by electronic devices.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Never assume a driver sees pedestrians, especially if you’re wearing a Halloween costume or a mask. Always make eye contact with drivers as they approach and confirm it’s okay before crossing in front of a vehicle.&nbsp;Be visible at all times by wearing bright clothing during the day and reflective materials at night. Always use a flashlight when it’s dark out to help you see and help others see you.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">When possible, cross streets at crosswalks or intersections where drivers expect Halloween pedestrians. Look for cars in all directions, including turning vehicles. If a crosswalk or intersection is not available, locate a well-lit area where you have the best view of traffic. Wait for a gap in traffic allowing you enough time to cross the street safely and continue watching for traffic as you cross.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-never-drink-alcohol-to-stay-warm"><strong>Never Drink Alcohol To Stay Warm</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Avoid using alcohol and drugs when walking as a Halloween pedestrian. Both impair your abilities and judgment. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/01/health/01real.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">While alcohol may seem to create a sensation of warmth, it actually decreases core body temperature regardless of the temperature outside, increasing the risk of&nbsp;hypothermia.</a>&nbsp;Have a great time celebrating this Halloween and get home safely!</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Halloween Safety Month is upon us. October is designated Halloween Safety Month each year. The goals? Highlighting security measures, including making costumes visible and well-fitting, supervising trick-or-treaters, checking candy for safety, and ensuring the homes and yards are safe for visitors.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Before participating in Halloween events and activities, take time to review safety tips with your children and prepare them for potential risks. Remind kids they must watch for cars and be seen by drivers, to be wary of strangers, and to wait until they get home to eat treats. Stay safe and use caution when celebrating Halloween.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-costume-and-makeup-safety-checks"><strong>Costume And Makeup Safety Checks</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Costume safety is a critical component to Halloween Safety Month. Check the ingredients of Halloween makeup and ensure it’s nontoxic. Keep makeup away from directly coming into contact with a child’s eyes, mouth, and nose. Test makeup on a small area of skin to ensure it doesn’t cause an irritation or allergic reaction. Be sure to thoroughly wash off all costume makeup before going to bed.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Look over costumes for loose strings, tears, and fasteners. Check the materials used to make costumes, wigs, and accessories and confirm they are fire-resistant. Despite marketing, some costumes may be dangerous or require modifications to be safe for children. Increase Halloween Safety and try on costumes to ensure they fit well and aren’t hazardous <strong>before going trick-or-treating</strong>.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-halloween-safety-tips"><strong>Halloween Safety Tips</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">If you or your children are trick-or-treating, carry flashlights and wear reflective clothing. Increase Halloween safety even more – add reflective tape to costumes – ensuring others easily see children walking along dark or poorly lit roadways. Another option: instead of carrying a flashlight, tie glowsticks for children to treat bags and buckets. The best way to avoid being hit by a car? Stay visible to drivers.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Plan your children’s trick-or-treating route ahead of time and ensure all parents and children are familiar with where they’ll be walking. An adult should accompany young children along their trick-or-treating route to provide additional security. Remind children to stick together and not break into smaller groups. Walk along well-lit areas and avoid neighborhoods that don’t have streetlamps.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">If your children are older and going without adult supervision, remind them to be wary of strangers. Teach your children to never enter a stranger’s home, even on Halloween. The distraction of scary decorations and possible Halloween activities can be alluring, but it’s always best to keep safety and security in mind.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">If the weather is particularly chilly, bring gloves, mittens, or pocket-sized hand warmers along. Remember to wash your gloves or mittens after you get back home. Smaller children may need to take a break to warm up, rest, and rehydrate before continuing to trick-or-treat. Halloween safety includes scheduling stops along your route to avoid fatigue and be mindful of cold hands or feet.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-always-check-treats"><strong>Always Check Treats</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Checking treats and throwing away contaminated or spoiled candy is key to added security.  Discolored, torn, soiled, or loose wrappers are common indicators that the candy should be thrown out. Although it is unlikely to find harmful items or spoiled treats, parents should always check candy before allowing children to enjoy their haul.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Labor Day explores the achievements of the United States in the development and improvement of the welfare of workers. Accordingly, Alaska, along with the rest of the United States, observes Labor Day on the first Monday of September. The day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. Traditionally, people celebrate with parties, street parades, and even athletic events.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-history"><strong>History</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">In the late nineteenth century, activists pushed for a federal holiday recognizing the labor force’s many contributions to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being. Consequently, the movement created a day of observance towards the end of the 19th century. Eventually, it was designated a federal holiday in 1894. However, the actual founder of Labor Day has never been identified.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Labor Day honors the efforts of individuals who fought in the American labor movement. Additionally, it focuses on their contributions and success in the development of the rights and freedoms of laborers. The labor unions fought for safer working conditions, better wages, and fewer working hours, giving them a better work-life balance. Further, the holiday weekend represents summer’s ending and the beginning of the school year for many Americans.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-labor-day-celebrations"><strong>Labor Day Celebrations</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Throughout <a href="https://www.alaska.org/things-to-do" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alaska</a>, including <a href="https://www.anchorage.net/events/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Anchor</a><a href="https://www.anchorage.net/events/">age</a>, <a href="https://stayhappening.com/e/41st-annual-labor-day-parade-and-picnic-E2ISXTLXRWJ" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fairbanks</a>, <a href="https://www.ktoo.org/calendar/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Juneau</a>, and the <a href="https://www.alaskavisit.com/events/calendar-of-events/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mat-Su Valley</a>, people mark Labor Day with private and public gatherings. Regardless of how you celebrate Labor Day, please do so safely:</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Independence Day – The Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. This historic event declared the 13 American colonies free from British rule.&nbsp;Therefore, the day is remembered as the true start of American independence. The day has been one of celebration since 1776. In 1870 the U.S. Congress made the Fourth of July a federal holiday.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-history-of-independence-day"><strong>History of Independence Day</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Although the Continental Congress voted for the Declaration of Independence on July 2nd, its formal adoption occurred on July 4th. During the summer of 1776 many colonists held mock funerals for King George III symbolizing the death of the monarchy in America. These early celebrations included festivals featuring music, parades, cannon and musket fire.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">On July 4, 1777, Bristol, Rhode Island fired thirteen&nbsp;gunshots&nbsp;in salute, once at morning and once again as evening fell. A July 18, 1777, article in <em>The Virginia Gazette</em>&nbsp;noted Philadelphia celebrations reflecting those modern American would find familiar. Celebrations included: an official dinner for the Continental Congress, toasts,&nbsp;13-gun salutes, speeches, prayers, music, parades, troop reviews, and fireworks. It marks the longest day of the year, or the day with the most hours of sunlight. Across the state of Alaska, major cities will see between 18.5 – 22.5 <a href="https://www.alaska.org/weather/daylight-hours" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hours of daylight</a> over the Summer Solstice weekend. In Barrow, Alaska – 24 hours of sunlight lasts over a month, extending from the middle of May through the end of July.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Many people worldwide celebrate Summer Solstice in various ways. Most Alaskans enjoy a long weekend camping or attending community events. The <a href="https://www.explorefairbanks.com/event/midnight-sun-baseball-game/9365/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Midnight Sun Baseball Game</a> traditionally begins at 10:00 p.m. and ends in the early hours of the following day. On Friday, June 20th the interior should see approximately 22 constant hours of sunlight and more than 21 hours on Saturday and Sunday. </p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Anchorage has a local tradition for hikers to ascend the <a href="https://alaskahikesearch.com/hikes/flat-top/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Flat Top</a> trail during Summer Solstice In Alaska to enjoy the seemingly endless sunset. You might score a view of the Anchorage skyline and Denali in sublime color wash – barring rain or wildfires. Expect daylight to last 21 hours or more in Anchorage throughout the solstice weekend. There are many other celebratory events, including the <a href="https://www.anchoragemayorsmarathon.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Anchorage Mayor’s Marathon and Half-Marathon</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Memorial Day is a&nbsp;federal holiday in the United States&nbsp;remembering those who died serving in the&nbsp;Armed Forces protecting America’s freedom.&nbsp;The United States remembers these brave individuals&nbsp;on Memorial Day – held the last Monday of May each year.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-history-of-memorial-day"><strong>History of Memorial Day</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">After the civil war, many cities honored fallen soldiers. In fact, by 1890, every Northern state adopted “Decoration Day” as a holiday. World War I and World Ward II changed this. Decoration Day became a remembrance day for all military who died in service. Then, in 1971, Congress set the last Monday in May as Memorial Day.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-remembering-the-sacrifice"><strong>Remembering The Sacrifice</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Notably, on Memorial Day, the&nbsp;flag of the United States&nbsp;raises to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowers to the&nbsp;half-staff&nbsp;position until noon.&nbsp;The flag is at full-staff through the remainder of the day.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Furthermore, many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day to honor and mourn those who died while serving. In 2000, Congress passed the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Moment_of_Remembrance" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Moment of Remembrance</a>&nbsp;Act, asking America to stop and remember at 3:00 pm. Memorial Day observances are often marked by dedications and remarks by veterans and politicians.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-honoring-the-fallen"><strong>Honoring The Fallen</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Equally important are the celebrations honoring the freedom gained through sacrifice. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pbs.org/national-memorial-day-concert/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Memorial Day Concert</a>&nbsp;takes place on the west lawn of the&nbsp;United States Capitol.&nbsp;The concert unites the country in remembrance and appreciation of those who gave their lives for our nation and serves those who are grieving through the mission put forward by Abraham Lincoln in his second inaugural address:</p>

These parades feature marching bands and an overall military theme. Notably, Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard, and Veteran service members participate in these parades. The parades also showcase military vehicles from various wars.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">National Road Trip Day became a holiday in 2019 because of Pilot Flying J. Pilot Flying J is currently the largest travel center operator in North America. They chose the last Monday in May as the day for the holiday because it marks the start of summer in North America and offers most people a long weekend. Travel stories are woven into America’s very fabric and it makes sense to observe a day that celebrates that part of our country’s history.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-national-road-trip-day-origins">National Road Trip Day Origins</h2>



<p class="has-small-font-size">There’s a reason why “The Great American Road Trip” is a catchphrase. The U.S. is the one country where road trips count as a holiday in themselves. Whether it’s to pay tribute to fallen heroes by visiting war memorials across the country, or an excuse to get out of town and have a change of scenery; road trips are loved by Americans throughout the country.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">The first recorded road trip across the U.S. began in 1903 with a bet. Someone bet Horatio Nelson Jackson (a physician and automobile pioneer) that he could not travel from San Francisco to New York City in less than 90 days. Accompanied by mechanic Sewall K. Crocker, and a dog named Bud, they set off in a 20-horsepower Winston to prove them wrong. Despite numerous mishaps, Jackson and Crocker completed the trip in 63 days.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Happy New Year! There are many ways to welcome the New Year. Typically, people enjoy parties on <a href="/blog/new-years-eve" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New Year’s Eve</a>, preparing special meals, making <a href="https://www.history.com/news/new-years-history-festive-facts" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">resolutions</a>, and performing certain rituals. Regardless of how you enjoy welcoming the New Year, stay safe and stay healthy.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-new-year-s-day-resolutions"><strong>New Year’s Day Resolutions</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Resolutions are a New Year’s tradition that many enjoy. Most often, a resolution for a positive change and a happy new year. This reflective moment affords people the opportunity to think back on the past year of their life and consider what they want to change or improve in the new year. Often times resolutions are personal goals related to health, fitness, traveling, or financial freedom.  Planning resolutions and following through with goals helps prepare for success in the coming year.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-food-for-good-luck-in-the-new-year"><strong>Food For Good Luck in the New Year</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">There isn’t a traditional meal for New Year’s Day, yet there are <a href="https://www.history.com/news/new-years-food-traditions" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">foods thought to bring good luck and a happy new year</a>. Bottles of champagne pop the world over on New Year’s Eve. For some, it’s all about&nbsp;<em>eating</em>&nbsp;grapes.&nbsp;The Spanish tradition of “the 12 lucky grapes”- eating 12 grapes at midnight – one with each chime of the clock. brings good luck in the coming year. </p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">An Italian New Year’s Eve feasts can mean multiple courses served over several hours. For instance, one dish said to bring especially good luck is lentils. Shaped like a coin, lentils are symbol of prosperity. </p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Other good luck foods include pretzels, black-eyed peas, pickled herring, lentils, soba noodles, tamales, king cake, and a dish called hoppin’ john.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-throwing-open-doors-and-windows"><strong>Throwing Open Doors and Windows</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Open up your windows and/or doors around the home to let go of the previous year and welcome in the fresh energy and vitality of a Happy New Year.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-cleaning-on-new-year-s-day"><strong>Cleaning On New Year’s Day</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Why wait until spring?  A deep clean of the home on New Year’s Day is thought by many to  “sweep away” bad luck. This allows good luck to pour into their lives for a Happy New Year.</p>

Whether you spend the holiday solo, with a small group, or in a larger gathering, keep these New Year’s Eve safe celebration tips in mind. They will help you fully enjoy this celebration while minimizing risk.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-celebrating-new-year-s-eve"><strong>Celebrating New Year’s Eve</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">New Year’s Eve is a great chance to celebrate the year gone by and the coming of a new one. However, these celebrations also come with great dangers and responsibilities. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you make your New Year’s Eve plans!</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-fireworks"><strong>Fireworks</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">All fireworks, including sparklers and bottle rockets, are <a href="https://www.muni.org/Departments/Fire/pages/faq.aspx#:~:text=All%20fireworks%2C%20including%20sparklers%20and,fine%20of%20up%20to%20%24300.00.">illegal in the Municipality of Anchorage</a> and the use of fireworks is punishable&nbsp;with&nbsp;a fine of up to $300.00.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">If you live outside Anchorage and decide to use legal fireworks for your New Year’s Eve celebration, keep children and pets away from the area. Even sparklers, which are often used by kids, burn at temperatures of about 2000 degrees and can be incredibly dangerous. Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose at the ready.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Light fireworks one at a time, then move away from them. Never attempt to re-light a firework that did not go off the first time; douse spent fireworks with plenty of water before discarding them. And of course, never point or throw fireworks at another person.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-if-you-are-hosting-a-new-year-s-eve-party"><strong>If You Are Hosting A New Year’s Eve Party</strong></h3>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Offer non-alcoholic drink options and have plenty of water available.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Use differently colored cups for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Dump unattended cups so kids and pets do not consume them.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Provide food and snacks so guests aren’t drinking on an empty stomach. </li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Provide snacks throughout the evening.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Set up tables or eating areas that encourage guests to eat comfortably and reduce over-consuming alcohol.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Avoid salty snacks, which can actually encourage people to drink more.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Practice&nbsp;food safety&nbsp;by keeping cold food cold and hot foods hot.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Do not provide alcohol to minors. Keep an eye on all drinks and supplies.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Stock all bathrooms with hand soap and disposable towels.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Wipe down bathroom surfaces throughout the evening to minimize the risk of spreading colds and flu.</li>
</ul>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-as-the-party-winds-down"><strong>As The Party Winds Down</strong></h3>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Have the numbers for reliable transportation services including local taxis, <a href="https://www.lyft.com/rider/cities/anchorage-ak">Lyft</a> and <a href="https://www.uber.com/?uclick_id=26b99238-7e97-4546-bd8d-54a16494282b">Uber</a>.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Identify a trusted designated driver ready to take guests home if necessary.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Research numbers for local hospitals and authorities and have them ready in the case of an accident.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Provide guests a place to stay overnight if needed. Even if accommodations are less than ideal (like a blanket on the floor), they will be safe! </li>
</ul>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-when-attending-a-party"><strong>When Attending A Party</strong></h3>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Monitor your health. Do not attend if you have signs of any illness before the party.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Eat a meal before leaving home in case you aren’t able to eat the food at the party, or if there isn’t any food at the party.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Again, have the numbers for reliable transportation services including local taxis, <a href="https://www.lyft.com/rider/cities/anchorage-ak">Lyft</a> and <a href="https://www.uber.com/?uclick_id=26b99238-7e97-4546-bd8d-54a16494282b">Uber</a>. Whether for you or other guests, friends don’t let friends drive drunk.</li>
</ul>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-driving-on-new-year-s-eve"><strong>Driving</strong> <strong>On New Year’s Eve </strong></h3>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Drinking and driving don’t mix. Use a designated driver.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Leave early, the later it gets in the evening, the higher the chance of a&nbsp;drunk driving related accident.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">If you drive home, let someone know you are heading home, and keep them posted when you arrive home safely.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">Drive extra carefully when heading home and leave extra space between you and other cars just to be safe.</li>



<li class="has-primary-color has-text-color has-small-font-size"><strong><a href="/blog/drinking-and-driving" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Never drink and drive</a></strong>.</li>



<li class="has-small-font-size">If in doubt about your ability to drive, have a sober friend take you home, or take a taxi, <a href="https://www.lyft.com/rider/cities/anchorage-ak">Lyft</a> and <a href="https://www.uber.com/?uclick_id=26b99238-7e97-4546-bd8d-54a16494282b">Uber</a> home.</li>
</ul>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-walking-on-new-year-s-eve"><strong>Walking</strong> <strong>On</strong> <strong>New Year’s Eve </strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">New Year’s Eve is also a dangerous night for pedestrians. Not only are drivers potentially impaired, but those on foot can also ignore traffic lights or crosswalks. If you are walking on New Year’s Eve, stay on pedestrian paths and observe traffic laws. Cross at crosswalks and try to remain in well-lit areas. If you are driving, take extra care to consider those on foot.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Holiday road travel presents increased danger during the winter driving season. The <a href="https://newsroom.acg.aaa.com/year-end-holiday-travel-sc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Automobile Association</a> reports an expected 119 million holiday travelers will travel 50 miles or more from home. That’s 3 million more travelers than last year, and close to 65,000 more travelers than the previous record highs, set in 2019.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-impaired-driving-s-impact-on-holiday-road-travel"><strong>Impaired Driving’s Impact On Holiday Road Travel</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">The <a href="https://www.nsc.org/newsroom/more-than-300-people-may-die-on-u-s-roads-this-hol" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Safety Council</a> predicts that more than 300 people will die in a car crash during the Christmas and New Year holiday road travel season. In 2022, there were&nbsp;more than 13,000 deaths related to drunk-driving accidents or 32 percent of all traffic fatalities. On average, one person died every 39 minutes in an alcohol-impaired driving crash in 2022.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">&nbsp;A major cause of holiday road travel deaths is impaired driving. Bad weather also causes accidents. When you add drinking, driving <em><u>and</u></em> bad weather together, the mixture can be deadly.&nbsp;These dangers led to Proclamation 10866: National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, 2024.</p>

During National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, we remind everyone that they can save lives by driving only when sober, calling for a ride, planning ahead, and making sure friends and loved ones do the same.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-other-common-factors-in-holiday-road-travel-hazards"><strong>Other Common Factors In Holiday Road Travel Hazards</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size"><strong><a href="/blog/distracted-drivers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Distracted Driving</a></strong>: Distracted driving causes traffic crashes when a driver’s focus prevents them from responding to winter driving conditions. Reduce the possibility of accidents during the holiday season, by taking extra precautions and staying focused on the road.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size"><strong>Fatigued Driving</strong>: The holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year. Exhausted drivers are at risk of falling asleep while driving, which can increase the risk of traffic accidents during holiday travel.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size"><strong>Peak Travel Periods</strong>: The number goes up when holidays fall on a weekend and down when Christmas&nbsp;is in the middle of the week. In other words, when fewer people are on the road, fewer people get hurt. Plan your holiday travel to avoid the last-minute rush. It is also wise to avoid winter driving during busy hours.</p>



<p class="has-small-font-size"><strong>Alaska Wildlife Crossing</strong>: Unique to Alaska and other northern locations, is large animals, such as moose and caribou, crossing highways. Alaska drivers must always remain alert for large animals crossing <a href="/blog/alaska-roads" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alaska roadways</a>.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-arrive-alive"><strong>Arrive Alive</strong></h3>



<p class="has-small-font-size">The <a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/press-releases/nhtsa-launches-winter-holiday-drive-sober-or-get-pulled-over-campaign">National Highway Traffic Safety Administration</a> urges everyone to plan a safe ride home and to always wear a seat belt this holiday season. Slow down and leave plenty of room for stopping. <em>Drive with your headlights on!</em></p>



<p class="has-small-font-size">Never drive under the influence – not even with a “buzz” … Winter driving, or <em><span style="text-decoration: underline">any</span> </em>driving impaired by a substance – whether alcohol or other drugs – legal or illegal – is against the law throughout the United States, including Alaska. If you see an impaired driver on the road, call 911.</p>
