Labor Day, the first Monday of September, honors American workers’ contributions and achievements, in Alaska and throughout the United States.

Labor Day in Alaska: History, Celebrations, and Safety Tips

The first Monday of September is set aside as Labor Day and honors the contributions and achievements of American workers. In Alaska and throughout the United States, Labor Day also marks the unofficial end of summer and the beginning of the school year for many families.

For many Alaskans, the holiday weekend means traveling, attending community events, gathering with family and friends, enjoying the outdoors, and taking part in parades or other celebrations. Whether you spend Labor Day at home or on the road, taking a few simple safety precautions can help keep the holiday weekend safe.

What Is Labor Day?

Labor Day is a federal holiday that recognizes the contributions American workers have made to the nation’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.

The holiday grew out of the American labor movement during the late 19th century. Workers and labor organizations advocated for safer workplaces, better wages, reasonable working hours, and improved working conditions.

President Grover Cleveland signed legislation establishing Labor Day as a federal holiday in 1894. Although several individuals have been credited with originating the holiday, its exact founder remains uncertain.

Today, Labor Day is both a commemoration of American workers and a long-standing September holiday. For many families, the three-day weekend also signals the transition from summer activities to the start of the school year.

How Do Alaskans Celebrate?

Labor Day celebrations vary throughout Alaska. Communities may hold parades, picnics, festivals, athletic events, and other gatherings. Families also use the long weekend for camping, boating, fishing, hiking, traveling, and backyard barbecues.

Events and activities may take place in communities including Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and the Mat-Su Valley, as well as throughout the rest of the state.

Because Labor Day often involves travel and outdoor activities, safety should be part of every holiday plan.

Labor Day Safety Tips for Alaska

Stay Safe Around Parades and Crowds

If you attend a Labor Day parade or community event:

Stay in designated viewing areas and follow event rules.

Keep children close and supervise them around streets and crowds.

Stay clear of moving vehicles, floats, and other parade participants.

Use designated crosswalks and pedestrian areas.

Keep an eye on children near parking lots and roadways.

Practice Fire Safety at Barbecues and Campfires

Labor Day gatherings often include grilling, campfires, or other outdoor cooking. Use grills and fire pits in appropriate locations and keep children away from hot surfaces, flames, and other hazards.

Before starting a campfire, check current Alaska fire conditions and restrictions. Never leave a fire unattended, and make sure it is completely extinguished before leaving.

Use Fireworks Carefully

If fireworks are legal where you are celebrating, follow local rules and keep spectators, particularly children, at a safe distance.

Never allow children to handle fireworks, and do not use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Watch Children Around Water

Labor Day is one of the last opportunities of the summer for many Alaskans to enjoy lakes, rivers, pools, and other waterways.

Keep children within sight whenever they are near water. Use properly fitted life jackets for children and anyone who may need additional flotation support. Remember that Alaska’s cold water can create serious risks even during warm weather.

Drive Safely

Labor Day weekend can mean more vehicles on Alaska’s roads and highways. Give yourself additional time, slow down when conditions require it, and stay alert for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, and other travelers.

Never drive after drinking. Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare or taxi when available, or arrange another safe way to get home.

Enjoy a Safe Holiday in Alaska

Labor Day is an opportunity to recognize the contributions of American workers while enjoying time with family, friends, and the Alaska community.

Whether you are attending a parade in Anchorage, traveling through the Mat-Su Valley, enjoying the outdoors near Fairbanks, or spending the weekend somewhere else in Alaska, take a few minutes to plan for safety.

Have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend in Alaska.

Holiday Air Travel – The increase in holiday travel is more than just busier roads. Airports also experience an influx and are often very chaotic this time of year. With the increase in travelers, there are several things to consider when flying over the holiday season.

Prepare Before Your Flight

Traveling during the holiday season, especially holiday air travel, introduces many new germs to your immune system. Avoid becoming sick during or after the holidays by drinking water days before your flight and preparing your immune system. Continue drinking water regularly while you are traveling so that your body stays hydrated. Sleep is important for the same reason and allows your body to fight bacteria that may cause sickness. Get plenty of rest, especially while during holiday air travel.

Allow Extra Time For Holiday Air Travel

Check Airport Status: Visit alaskaair.com/airport-guides for specific holiday air travel information, especially in hubs like Seattle. Arrive early, aiming for two hours domestic flights and three hours for international due to airport congestion.

Provide Extra Travel Time: To the airport due to increases in traffic. If you drive yourself to the airport, consider the time it takes to park and unload your vehicle. Store keys in an easy to find location and take a photo of your parking spot. This jogs the memory of where your car is parked upon your return home.

Reduce Check-In Wait Times: Check-in online before you leave your house. The goal of TSA is to get everyone through security as quickly as possible while also protecting travelers. Know the rules before you and prepare by putting liquids and electronics in easy-to-reach locations for holiday air travel security lines.

Luggage

Consider what you are taking and if you actually need it. Check bags when necessary but remember, you will have to lug everything through busy airports during holiday air travel arrivals and departures.

If you are transporting gifts on your flight, do not wrap the gifts ahead of time. If TSA needs to see what is inside, they can rip your wrapped gifts open.

Pack light for carry-on luggage and remember many flights during holiday air travel windows are full with very little overhead space. If you lock your luggage, make sure the lock is TSA approved. Finally, never leave your luggage unattended. It is a safety concern but also can get stolen.

Whether traveling by car, bus, train, or plane, plan ahead – avoid being overwhelmed by the crowds. General courtesy and safety precautions for holiday air travel keeps everyone safer. Travel safety considerations are the best way to avoid potential dangers.

Johnson Law has been helping injured Alaskans for 30 years. It’s who we are. And while we hope you never need us… We’re here if you do. ~ Doug Johnson

Toy Safety Month is here. December is National Gift and Toy Safety Month, a crucial awareness campaign during the peak holiday season to remind parents, caregivers, and gift-givers to choose age-appropriate toys, check for safety certifications, avoid hazards like small parts, sharp edges, and long cords, and ensure gifts promote a safe, healthy playtime for children. Organizations like the American Public Health Association and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) promote this observance to prevent thousands of toy-related injuries and deaths annually.

Key Tips for Toy Safety (Especially in December):

Age Appropriateness: Always check the label for recommended age ranges and consider the child’s individual skills.

Choking Hazards: Avoid toys with small parts for children under three; these are major causes of injury.

Sharp Points/Edges: Inspect for sharp edges or parts that can fly off.

Cords & Strings: Steer clear of toys with ropes, cords, or strings longer than 12 inches for young children.

Batteries & Magnets: Be cautious with button batteries and small, powerful magnets, which are dangerous if swallowed.

Material & Durability: Look for sturdy toys and avoid materials with lead or harmful chemicals, checking for safety seals like ASTM.

Protective Gear: Gift sports equipment with the necessary helmet and pads.

Further Gift Considerations

This holiday season (and beyond), please consider the following Toy Safety guidelines:

Inspect all toys before purchasing. Avoid those that shoot or include parts that fly off. Avoid toys with sharp edges or points. Toys should be sturdy enough to withstand impact without breaking, being crushed, or being pulled apart easily.

Be diligent about inspecting toys your child has received. Check recommended age, skill level, and developmental appropriateness before gifting.

Look for labels that assure you the toys have passed a safety inspection – “ATSM” means the toy has met the American Society for Testing and Materials standards.

Gifts of sports equipment should always be accompanied by protective gear (give a helmet with the skateboard)
