<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-is-your-auto-insurance-ready-for-summer-travel"><strong>Is Your Auto Insurance Ready for Summer Travel?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Alaska Summer Auto Insurance coverage review – Summer is one of the busiest driving seasons in Alaska. Additionally, increased tourism, road construction, recreational travel, motorcycles, RVs, and wildlife activity create unique risks for drivers. Before heading out on Alaska’s highways, every driver should complete an insurance coverage review to ensure they have adequate liability insurance, uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage, and Medical Payments (MedPay) coverage.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-why-alaska-drivers-should-conduct-an-alaska-summer-auto-insurance-review"><strong>Why Alaska Drivers Should Conduct An Alaska Summer Auto Insurance Review</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Many Alaskans think of winter as the most dangerous driving season. While snow and ice certainly create hazards, summer presents its own risks.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">For instance, as temperatures rise and daylight hours increase, Alaska roads become crowded with:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Tourists unfamiliar with local roads</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Recreational vehicles (RVs)</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Motorcycles</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Commercial tour buses</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Construction equipment</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Bicyclists and pedestrians</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Wildlife crossing highways</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Summer is also peak vacation season. Therefore, families travel long distances to fishing destinations, national parks, campgrounds, and remote communities throughout Alaska.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Before beginning your summer adventures, take time to review your auto insurance coverage. The right policy can protect your family from significant financial losses if an accident occurs.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-what-are-alaska-s-minimum-auto-insurance-requirements"><strong>What Are Alaska’s Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Alaska law requires drivers to carry liability insurance.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">In summary, the minimum required coverage includes:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">$50,000 bodily injury liability coverage per person</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">$100,000 bodily injury liability coverage per accident</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">$25,000 property damage liability coverage per accident</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Drivers must also be able to provide proof of insurance when requested.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Furthermore, failure to maintain insurance coverage can result in penalties that may include license suspension and other consequences.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">However, minimum coverage does not necessarily mean adequate protection.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-why-minimum-insurance-often-isn-t-enough"><strong>Why Minimum Insurance Often Isn’t Enough</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Many serious automobile accidents involve damages that far exceed Alaska’s minimum insurance requirements.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">In fact, a single collision can result in:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Emergency medical treatment</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Hospitalization</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Surgery</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Rehabilitation</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Lost wages</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Future medical expenses</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Permanent disability</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Reduced earning capacity</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Vehicle repair and replacement costs have also increased dramatically in recent years.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">In a serious accident, minimum liability limits can be exhausted quickly, leaving injured victims without enough compensation to cover their losses.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">An insurance coverage review can help determine whether your current limits truly protect your financial future.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-summer-driving-risks-unique-to-alaska"><strong>Summer Driving Risks Unique to Alaska</strong></h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-increased-tourist-traffic"><strong>Increased Tourist Traffic</strong></h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Every summer, visitors from around the world travel Alaska’s highways.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">As a result, many tourists are unfamiliar with:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Mountain driving</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Gravel roads</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Wildlife crossings</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Rapidly changing weather conditions</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Long rural stretches between services</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">These factors can increase the likelihood of accidents.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-road-construction-zones"><strong>Road Construction Zones</strong></h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Summer is road construction season across Alaska.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Drivers frequently encounter:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Reduced speed zones</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Lane shifts</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Uneven pavement</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Construction equipment</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Flaggers directing traffic</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Construction zone accidents often cause serious injuries and may involve multiple potentially responsible parties.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-motorcycle-accidents"><strong>Motorcycle Accidents</strong></h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Warm weather brings more motorcycles onto Alaska roads.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Motorcyclists have little physical protection during a crash, making injuries more severe and increasing the need for adequate insurance coverage.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-wildlife-collisions"><strong>Wildlife Collisions</strong></h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Moose, caribou, bears, and other wildlife remain active throughout the summer months.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">A collision with a large animal can cause catastrophic vehicle damage and serious injuries.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-what-is-uninsured-and-underinsured-motorist-coverage-um-uim"><strong>What Is Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM/UIM)?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size" id="h-uninsured-and-underinsured-motorist-coverage-protects-you-when-the-at-fault-driver-has-no-insurance-or-insufficient-insurance-to-cover-your-damages">Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or insufficient insurance to cover your damages.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">To illustrate, UM/UIM coverage may help pay for:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Medical expenses</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Lost income</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Future treatment costs</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Pain and suffering</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Permanent injury damages</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Unfortunately, many drivers carry only minimum coverage, while others drive without insurance entirely.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">If you suffer severe injuries and the at-fault driver lacks sufficient insurance, your UM/UIM coverage can become one of your most valuable protections.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-how-much-um-uim-coverage-should-alaska-families-carry"><strong>How Much UM/UIM Coverage Should Alaska Families Carry?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Insurance professionals and injury attorneys often recommend purchasing UM/UIM limits that match or exceed your liability coverage.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">For instance, common coverage options include:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">50/100</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">100/300</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">250/500</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Higher umbrella policy limits</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Many families find that increasing UM/UIM coverage provides substantial protection for a relatively modest increase in premium costs.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">When reviewing your policy, consider how much financial protection your family would need after a life-changing injury.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-what-is-medical-payments-coverage-medpay"><strong>What Is Medical Payments Coverage (MedPay)?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Medical Payments Coverage, commonly known as MedPay, helps pay accident-related medical expenses regardless of who caused the collision.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Benefits may include payment for:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Ambulance transportation</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Emergency room treatment</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Diagnostic testing</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Hospital stays</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Follow-up medical care</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">MedPay typically covers both the driver and passengers in the insured vehicle.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Unlike many other forms of coverage, MedPay benefits are often available immediately after an accident, helping families avoid medical debt while insurance claims are being resolved.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-why-medpay-is-especially-valuable-during-summer-travel"><strong>Why MedPay Is Especially Valuable During Summer Travel</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Many Alaska families spend considerable time on the road during the summer months.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Whether traveling to:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Denali</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Kenai Peninsula</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Valdez</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Homer</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Seward</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Fairbanks</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Remote fishing destinations</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">the risk of being involved in a serious accident increases simply because more miles are being driven, making an Alaska summer auto insurance coverage review even more critical</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Strong MedPay coverage can provide immediate assistance with medical bills following an unexpected collision far from home.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-alaska-summer-auto-insurance-coverage-checklist"><strong>Alaska Summer Auto Insurance Coverage Checklist</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Before your next road trip, review your policy and confirm:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Liability limits are adequate</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">UM/UIM coverage protects your family</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">MedPay limits are sufficient</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">All drivers in your household are listed properly</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Vehicles are correctly insured</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Emergency roadside coverage is available if needed</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Policy information is current and accessible</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">A simple annual review can uncover gaps in coverage before an accident occurs.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-what-should-you-do-after-a-serious-summer-car-accident-in-alaska"><strong>What Should You Do After a Serious Summer Car Accident in Alaska?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size">If you are injured in an automobile accident:</p>

<ol start="1" class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Seek immediate medical care.</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Contact law enforcement.</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Gather photographs and evidence if possible.</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Obtain witness information.</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Notify your insurance company.</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Consult an experienced Alaska personal injury attorney.</li>
</ol>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Speaking to a skilled law firm will help. Notably, an experienced Alaska personal injury attorney can investigate the crash, identify all available insurance policies, preserve critical evidence, and pursue compensation from negligent parties.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">In some cases, multiple insurance policies may apply, including liability insurance, UM/UIM coverage, MedPay benefits, commercial policies, and umbrella coverage.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<p class="has-small-font-size">Alaska law requires all drivers to maintain liability insurance coverage. The minimum required coverage limits are:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size"><strong>$50,000</strong> for bodily injury or death to one person</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size"><strong>$100,000</strong> for bodily injury or death per accident</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size"><strong>$25,000</strong> for property damage per accident</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">This coverage is commonly referred to as <strong>50/100/25 liability insurance coverage</strong>.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Liability insurance helps pay for injuries and property damage you cause to others in an accident. While Alaska insurance requirements are set at 50/100/25 liability insurance coverage – this may not be enough. However, minimum coverage limits may not fully protect your personal assets after a serious collision. Drivers should periodically review their policies with a licensed insurance professional to ensure they have adequate protection.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>Why Alaska Insurance Requirements Matter</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Maintaining proper insurance coverage is more than a legal obligation – it helps protect everyone on Alaska’s roads.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Without liability insurance coverage, drivers may face:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Driver’s license suspension</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Increased insurance premiums</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Personal financial liability for accident damages</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Difficulty registering or operating a vehicle</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Potential legal action from injured parties</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Even a single accident can create significant financial exposure if your coverage is inadequate.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>What Are Alaska’s Insurance Requirements After a Crash?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Following a serious motor vehicle accident, Alaska law requires drivers to provide proof of insurance to the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">A crash is generally considered serious if it involves:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Bodily injury to any person</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">A fatality</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Property damage exceeding $501</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Importantly, <strong>all drivers involved in the crash must provide proof of liability insurance coverage</strong>, regardless of who caused the collision.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Even if another driver was entirely at fault, you must still comply with Alaska’s reporting requirements.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>When Must Proof of Insurance Be Submitted?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Drivers involved in a qualifying accident must submit proof of insurance to the DMV within <strong>15 days</strong> of the collision.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">This requirement is separate from:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Reporting the accident to law enforcement</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Filing an insurance claim</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Providing information to your insurance company</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">In many cases, the investigating police officer will provide a Certificate of Insurance form at the accident scene. These forms are also available through Alaska DMV offices and state resources.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Failing to submit proof of insurance that meet Alaska insurance requirements within the required timeframe may lead to severe penalties as a result.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>What Should You Do After a Car Accident in Alaska?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size">After ensuring everyone is safe and emergency services have been contacted if necessary, take the following steps:</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>1. Gather Evidence</strong></h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Collect as much information as possible, including:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Photos of vehicle damage</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Photos of the accident scene</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Road and weather conditions</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Contact information for witnesses</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Driver and insurance information from all parties involved</li>
</ul>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>2. Seek Medical Attention</strong></h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Even if injuries seem minor, seek medical evaluation promptly. Some injuries, including concussions, traumatic brain injuries, and soft tissue injuries, may not immediately appear.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Prompt medical treatment also creates documentation that may be important for future insurance or legal claims.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>3. Notify Your Insurance Company</strong></h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Most insurance policies require prompt notification following an accident.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">When filing your claim, provide:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Photographs</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Medical records and bills</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Towing receipts</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Repair estimates</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Police reports</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Witness statements</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Providing complete documentation can help expedite the claims process.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>4. Be Careful With Recorded Statements</strong></h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size">If you are experiencing pain, confusion, memory problems, or difficulty concentrating after a collision, avoid giving recorded statements until you have received appropriate medical care and understand the extent of your injuries.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Serious injuries can affect memory, judgment, and communication. Protecting your health should be the priority.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>What Happens If You Do Not Meet Alaska Insurance Requirements?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Alaska imposes strict penalties on drivers who fail to maintain required insurance coverage or fail to provide proof of coverage after a qualifying accident.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Potential penalties include:</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>First Offense</strong></h4>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Driver’s license suspension for 90 days</li>
</ul>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>Second Offense</strong></h4>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Driver’s license suspension for one year</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">These penalties may apply if:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">You do not carry the required insurance coverage.</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">You cannot prove you had insurance at the time of the crash.</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">You fail to submit proof of insurance to the DMV within 15 days.</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">The consequences can affect your ability to work, travel, and maintain affordable insurance rates in the future.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>What If the Other Driver Was Uninsured?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Unfortunately, not every driver follows Alaska insurance laws.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">If you are injured by an uninsured or underinsured driver, you may still have options to recover compensation for:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Medical expenses</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Lost income</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Pain and suffering</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Property damage</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Future medical treatment</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Depending on the circumstances, compensation may be available through your own insurance coverage or through legal action against the responsible party.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">An experienced Alaska personal injury attorney can help evaluate your options and identify all available sources of recovery.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Statewide, around <a href="https://www.iii.org/fact-statistic/facts-statistics-uninsured-motorists" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">12.5% of Alaskan drivers do not have insurance</a>. That equates to around one in eight drivers, which is a relatively high risk. Following a crash with an uninsured or underinsured individual, injured parties without UM and UIM Insurance, must sue the at-fault driver for damages and injuries.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-um-and-uim-insurance-coverage"><strong>UM and UIM Insurance Coverage</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Just like the names suggest, both UM and UIM Insurance coverage apply to different situations. However, in each case someone other than the injured party must be at fault for the wreck. <strong>The uninsured or underinsured motorist must be “at-fault” having done something wrong to cause the wreck.</strong></p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Uninsured coverage applies immediately when an at-fault driver has no liability insurance at all. </p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Underinsured coverage applies when an at-fault driver driver does not have enough insurance to cover all damages they caused in the accident. <span style="text-decoration: underline">When an uninsured or underinsured motorist hurts you in a wreck, YOUR UM and UIM insurance may be the only way to pay your medical bills and repair your car</span><strong>.</strong></p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">UM and UIM Insurance coverages apply to the following:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Uninsured motorist <span style="text-decoration: underline">property</span> damage;</li>
