PTSD After A Car Accident – In addition to physical injuries, some may suffer psychologically injuries after experiencing a car accident. Post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD, is a mental health condition initiated by a terrifying event, may result following a car accident.

It’s common to think about an accident and feel emotions such as fear, anger and guilt. However, if those feelings start to interfere with a person’s life, it can be an indicator of PTSD or another serious condition. Please discuss these symptoms with a psychological professional or health care provider immediately.

Signs Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Some symptoms suggest an individual may have PTSD including: nightmares, uncontrollable or intrusive memories of the accident, fear of riding in a car, and excessive anger or worry. There are a number of ways that someone might cope with these feelings. Staying active and exercising is often greatly beneficial to recovering from PTSD. Discussing these feelings with a trusted friend or counselor can also bring relief.

Returning to normal life, daily routines, and habits as soon as possible can be helpful. Becoming a more defensive driver relieves some worries.

When To Seek Help

Individuals suffering with PTSD should not hesitate to follow up with their doctor as necessary. If disturbing thoughts and feelings about a traumatic event continue longer than a month, are severe, or prevent getting your life back under control, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional. Getting treatment as soon as possible can help prevent PTSD symptoms from getting worse. A doctor can monitor progress and refer an individual to other specialists if necessary.

Those who have been injured in automobile accidents may wish to consult an attorney. Recovery from a car accident can be costly, and an individual might want to file a lawsuit against the individual or entity responsible particularly for individuals suffering from PTSD. If another driver is responsible, it is not necessary for there to be criminal charges against that driver.
