Post-Concussion Syndrome
When you are involved in an accident, there are many types of injuries that you could face. Some may be evident immediately after the accident, but some injuries might take more time to come to the surface. This is true of post-concussion syndrome which most people will experience within 7 to 10 days from the time of the injury. This will often go away within a period of three months, but for some people it can last for a year or even longer.
While there is no exact knowledge for why this syndrome occurs, many believe that it is due to the structural damage to the brain or the neurotransmitter symptom being disrupted. Another belief is that it is the result of psychological factors since the major symptoms can also be found in those who are diagnosed with anxiety, depression or PTS (post-traumatic stress).
For those suffering from post-concussion syndrome, they will often experience headaches, fatigue, sensitivity to noise and light, insomnia, loss of memory and dizziness. The persistence of this syndrome can be draining on those who experience it. They may deal with trouble in their day to day living or may be inhibited from their job. Those more at risk for developing post-concussion syndrome are women older individuals or those who have dealt with a traumatic injury such as a vehicle collision, a fall or a sport related injury.
