What to do After a Car Accident
You’ve been involved in a motor vehicle accident and when the dust settles you are unsure of what to do next. The first concern should be to check for injuries on yourself and your passengers. If you are all unharmed then try to move to somewhere safe. If you are unable to move your car off the road and get out of the way of traffic, then remained buckled and stay there until emergency responders arrive.
Once you are somewhere safe and the passengers in the other car are found to be ok, you will want to exchange information. This includes information such as the following:
- Full name of the other driver and passengers
- Contact numbers
- Insurance provider, phone number andpolicy number
- License plate number
- Driver’s license (take a picture of this if possible)
- Make, model, color and year of the other driver’s car
In addition to getting information, try to take pictures of the location before leaving the scene of the accident. Take pictures of damage to your car, the other car and a farther back view of the area so that it can be used when describing what took place. If officers arrive at the accident, then they will begin a police report. If they do not, you can call the local police and make the report yourself. At this point you should explain the accident but refrain from saying who you think is at fault. You will need to report the incident to your insurance company, even if you are not at fault.
