Winter Driving Tips
Each year, on the first day of any significant snow fall, the number of motor vehicle accidents drastically increases. The arrival of winter with the slippery and icy road conditions is predictable every year, however, the level of the driver’s training and skills in the car beside you or behind you is not; thus, the importance of being an assertive, conscientious and safe driver yourself. Here are a few tips to help you avoid an accident this winter season.
- Frequently check your side and rear view mirrors for approaching vehicles
- If you are first in line at a red light, look before entering the intersection on the green light
- When stopping behind a vehicle allow plenty of time to slow down
- Brake gently and avoid sudden stops
- When stopping behind a vehicle leave enough room approximately 4 feet (a good gauge of this is stop when you can see the rear tires of the vehicle in front of you)
- Follow posted speed limits or if road conditions or visibility warrant slower speeds, adjust accordingly
- Do not speed
- Do not engage in distracting activities (i.e. texting, eating, reading, etc.)
- Remove all snow off all vehicle windows and the hood
- Avoid using cruise control and overdrive on icy roads
- Always wear your seat belt
- Be extra cautious on bridges and shady spots which are more prone to icy conditions
