Voting matters in Alaska, learn how elections shape local communities, and why every eligible Alaskan should exercise their right to vote.

Voting In Alaska Matters: Why Exercising Your Right To Vote Is Important

The right to vote is one of the most important rights Americans have. It gives individuals a voice in choosing their representatives, shaping public policy, and influencing decisions that affect their families and communities. For Alaskans, this opportunity extends beyond the ballot box. Furthermore, by exercising their right to vote, residents help shape the direction of state government, influence local priorities, and contribute to the future of the communities they call home.

Voting is more than a political activity. It is an important part of participating in our communities, protecting individual rights, and holding elected officials accountable. Whether an election involves national leadership, state government, or local community decisions, every eligible voter has an opportunity to participate.

The Right to Vote Is a Hard-Won Right

The right to vote was not always available to all Americans. Thus, throughout our nation’s history, generations of people worked to expand voting rights and remove barriers that prevented eligible citizens from participating in elections. These principles of freedom and equal treatment remain important today, as reflected in our nation’s observance of Juneteenth and its significance in Alaska.

For example: The 15th Amendment, ratified in 1870, prohibited denying the right to vote based on race. The 19th Amendment extended voting rights to women in 1920. Later, the 24th Amendment prohibited poll taxes in federal elections, and the 26th Amendment lowered the voting age to 18.

Additionally, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 provided additional federal protections against racial discrimination in voting.

These milestones reflect decades of effort to make voting more accessible and ensure that more Americans have a voice in our democracy. Exercising the right to vote recognizes the importance of those efforts and the rights they helped secure.

Why Voting Matters In Alaska

Alaska is a state of diverse communities, unique challenges, and vast geographic differences. Because of these differences, decisions made by elected officials can have far-reaching effects on daily life, influencing everything from public safety and transportation to education, infrastructure, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

Voting matters in Alaska. Through voting, Alaskans have an opportunity to help shape those decisions.

Local decisions affect everyday life. City councils, borough assemblies, school boards, and other local officials make decisions that directly affect the communities where Alaskans live and work. Local elections deserve attention because their outcomes can influence public services, community development, roads, schools, and local priorities.

State leadership shapes Alaska’s future. State legislators and statewide elected officials make decisions involving public safety, transportation, natural resources, education, healthcare, and other issues important to Alaskans. Voting matters in Alaska. It gives residents an opportunity to help determine who represents their interests in state government.

Federal decisions affect Alaska, too. Alaska’s representation in Congress and the decisions made by the federal government can have significant effects on the state’s economy, public lands, natural resources, infrastructure, and communities.

Voting creates accountability. Elections give voters an opportunity to evaluate elected officials, consider their records, and decide whether those officials should continue representing them. It is one of the ways citizens hold their government accountable.

Every Voice Deserves an Opportunity to Be Heard

Alaska’s communities have different needs and priorities. What matters to a family in Anchorage may differ from the concerns of someone living in a rural village, a fishing community, or a small Interior town.

Voting in Alaska provides an opportunity for people from different backgrounds and communities to participate in decisions that affect them.

An election is not simply about which candidate receives the most votes. It is also about ensuring that eligible citizens have the opportunity to express their views and participate in the process.

One vote may seem small, particularly in a large statewide or national election. However, elections are decided by the combined choices of individual voters. Every ballot contributes to that process.

Voting Is a Way to Protect Individual Rights In Alaska

The ability to participate in government is closely connected to the broader principle that individuals should have a voice in decisions affecting their lives.

Voting is another way individuals participate in protecting their interests. It allows citizens to help select the people who make laws, establish public priorities, and oversee government institutions. Understanding individual rights also means understanding how our legal system works. Explore these Alaska court and litigation terms to learn more.

Although voting and protecting someone’s legal rights are different responsibilities, both reflect an important principle: individuals should have a voice when decisions affect their lives.

At Johnson Law, we believe individual rights matter. Our work representing injured Alaskans specifically involves helping people understand their legal rights, hold responsible parties accountable, and pursue the compensation available under the law. The importance of accountability is also reflected in civil justice in Alaska car accidents, where injured people may pursue legal remedies when someone else’s negligence causes harm.

Make Your Vote Count: Take Time to Participate

Exercising your right to vote begins with being informed and making a plan. You do not need to agree with everyone around you, and you do not need to follow a particular political party to participate.

Consider these steps before an election:

Register to vote. Make sure you are registered and that your voter information is current.

Learn about the candidates. Review their qualifications, experience, public statements, and positions on issues that matter to you.

Understand ballot measures. Take time to research proposed laws and constitutional changes before deciding how to vote.

Know your voting options. Alaska offers several ways for eligible voters to cast a ballot. Review the available options and deadlines before Election Day.

Make time to vote. Whether you vote early, use an absentee ballot, or vote in person, plan ahead so you have an opportunity to participate.

For official registration information, election dates, voting locations, and other resources, visit the Alaska Division of Elections.

Your Voice Matters. Exercise Your Right to Vote.

The right to vote is both a personal right and an opportunity to participate in the future of our communities. It allows Alaskans to express their views, influence public decisions, and hold elected officials accountable.

You may not agree with every election outcome, and your preferred candidate may not always win. But participating gives you an opportunity to make your voice heard.

At Johnson Law, we believe that individual rights, accountability, and community involvement matter. We encourage all eligible Alaskans to take an active role in their communities and exercise their right to vote.

Your vote is your voice. Make it count.
