Emergency Supply Kit

It seems there is no end to the news of natural disasters reported in various parts of the world. Photos and stories of people affected by such tragedies remind us that it can strike unexpectedly. In Alaska, the fear of another major earthquake and/or tsunami as a result of an earthquake here or from a geographic neighbor is always a possibility. As with any disaster, it is better to be prepared with an emergency supply kit to keep you and your family hydrated and fed for a minimum of three days.

Here is a brief list of the bare essentials for any emergency supply kit:

• Flashlight with extra batteries
• 3-day water supply for each family member
• 3-day food supply for each family member
• First aid kit
• Blanket and/or sleeping bags
• Matches and/or lighter
• Personal hygiene supplies
• Plates, bowls, utensils and a can opener
• Warm clothing for each member of the family
• Another option is to purchase an already prepackaged emergency kit available online or at select grocery outlets.

It is recommended that an emergency supply kit be kept in your home and in your vehicles.
