Personal Injury Auto Claims – When filing Personal Injury Auto Claims or PI Claims, claimants face the full resources of multi-national insurance companies. Insurance is a business. As a business, insurance companies do not like to hand out money.

Insurance Adjusters

Insurance adjusters are sometimes helpful, but their role is complex. Be very clear, insurance company adjusters work for the insurance company – not you. They “win” to the extent you “lose.” Employed by the insurance company, their goal is to settle claims according to the insurance policy. This puts the insurance companies’ financial interests ahead of your interests.

An insurance adjuster’s responsibility is to settle personal injury claims within policy limits or less. Furthermore, insurance adjusters often receive compensation based upon how little money is paid to claimants like you. For these reasons, it is best for the injured claimant to call a personal injury attorney – a professional who is 100% on your side.

Personal Injury Attorneys

A PI Auto Claims Lawyer brings individual expertise and focus to their practice of law. For example, personal injury lawyers ensure you are properly “made whole” for negligence that results in an injury. These attorneys litigate and resolve cases when a person suffers injuries.

In addition, a skilled personal injury lawyer is familiar with insurance company tactics, guiding you through the PI Auto Claims process. A skilled personal injury claims attorney will normally speak to you at no charge, evaluating your case and (at a minimum) pointing you in the right direction. You have nothing to lose … and everything to gain.

Filing Personal Injury Auto Claims

After a serious automobile crash, reach out to a reputable PI Auto Claims attorney right away. Your attorney will gather evidence to prove the negligence of the third party responsible for your injuries. If they succeed, you may receive compensation to repair your vehicle, pay your medical bills, lost wages, and other necessary long-term care costs.

Umbrella coverage may not come up often in insurance conversations, but it’s a valuable protection for policyholders. This type of insurance adds an extra layer of financial security to help meet your insurance needs. Think of it as an “umbrella” that protects you and others in the event of an accident. It provides additional coverage on top of your existing policies, such as auto, renter, and homeowner insurance.

Umbrella Coverage Adds Liability Protection.

If you find yourself responsible for someone’s injuries or claims, an umbrella policy proves to be valuable. Once you have exhausted all of your primary insurance coverage, the umbrella policy takes over to safeguard you and your assets against excess liability. This means that if someone gets injured because of your actions, the umbrella policy helps cover expenses beyond the limits of your primary insurance. Plus, this insurance shields your assets from liability claims and lawsuits.

Umbrella coverage can provide essential protection against excess damages. If someone else’s negligence causes you severe injuries, make sure your attorney investigates the at-fault party’s umbrella coverage. For instance, suppose you’re involved in a car accident and suffer serious injuries, but their auto insurance falls short of covering your medical expenses and claims. A skilled attorney will look into the at-fault party’s umbrella insurance to help you recover losses stemming from the accident.

Umbrella Coverage Start Where Other Policies Stop

Consider umbrella insurance, or personal liability insurance, as your safety net. If someone sues you for damages that surpass the liability limits of your car, homeowners, boat, or other insurance policies, an umbrella policy covers what you owe.

Most Umbrella coverage offers policies in increments of $1 million. You can expect to pay around $150 to $350 annually for the first $1 million of coverage, with an additional cost of about $100 for each million beyond that. Your location plays a big role in determining the exact cost, as rates differ by state. Additionally, the total number of homes, cars, and boats you insure also affects the premium.

Is Buying An Umbrella Insurance Policy Necessary?

Do you need an umbrella insurance policy? Since it’s not required by law, people typically buy umbrella coverage to protect significant assets or to guard against a higher risk of lawsuits. The more you aim to safeguard, the more coverage you’ll likely need. Follow the four steps below to learn about umbrella policies and how to secure one to shield yourself in case anything unexpected happens.

First, consult your insurance agent. To sell an Umbrella policy, insurers require you to have liability coverage for both your homeowner’s and auto policies.

Next, understand the minimum coverage amounts: typically, homeowners insurance starts at $300,000, while auto insurance generally requires $250,000 for injury to each person and $500,000 per accident.

Then, consider the limits: Insurance companies often cap home and auto liability policies at $500,000 or $1 million. Keep in mind that adding more coverage will increase your costs.

Finally, crunch the numbers: It’s usually more cost-effective to secure an umbrella policy rather than raising your liability limits beyond the minimums set by your insurer before opting for umbrella coverage.

It Helps With Other Financial Drains As Well

Umbrella coverage offers more than just liability protection; it may also cover legal fees, false arrest, libel, and slander. Umbrella coverage provides a safety net in case you face a lawsuit. By adding umbrella coverage to your existing policies, you can better assist those injured in serious accidents. Planning ahead for potential mishaps is crucial.

When you combine umbrella coverage with your home and auto policies, you create an extra layer of security. This policy can also be beneficial if you encounter legal issues while driving or renting a vehicle. In short, an umbrella policy safeguards you in the event of a lawsuit.

Protect Yourself After An Accident

After a serious automobile crash, reach out to an injury attorney right away. Your attorney will gather evidence to prove the negligence of the third party responsible for your injuries. If they succeed, you can receive compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and other necessary long-term care costs. A winter auto insurance review can significantly impact your financial recovery.

MedPay also covers insured pedestrians if they are hurt by another vehicle while a pedestrian, even if they are nowhere near their insured vehicle.

Auto MedPay helps pay bills for doctors, hospitals, X-rays, ambulances, and surgeries. Furthermore, MedPay can help fill the financial drains caused by health insurance deductibles, and copays. Finally, MedPay usually covers funeral costs in fatal crashes.

Medical Payments Insurance does not reimburse lost wages or cover property damage.

Auto MedPay Coverage

Auto MedPay covers expenses arising from a car crash – even if an insured person is in an auto accident nowhere near the insureds’ vehicle. Specific medical expenses normally covered include:

Medical Transport (EMT);

Emergency Room Expenses;

Choosing Your Medical Payments Coverage Amount

Choosing Auto MedPay coverage amounts is unique to each individual or family. It should be based on your financial situation and health insurance coverage. And while MedPay coverage is not mandatory under Alaskan law – it should be. Many people have no MedPay or only $5,000. This is not enough. When purchasing Auto MedPay, consider higher limits, particularly if you frequently have passengers in your vehicle.

We recommend at least $100K of Auto MedPay insurance. It should cost around $8 to $12.50 per month or $50 to $75 every six months. This is cheap protection. People with sufficient MedPay avoid harassment by collection agencies after Motor Vehicle Accidents. More importantly, sufficient Auto MedPay insurance helps protect families from bankruptcy by medical bills. Choose the highest MedPay coverage limit you can fit into your budget – a minimal cost for tremendous peace of mind. Buy all you can afford.

MedPay Stacks – Injured In Someone Else’s Vehicle?

If you suffer injuries riding in someone else’s vehicle, ask if they have MedPay coverage. The vehicle owner’s MedPay coverage will help cover your related medical treatment. Your Auto MedPay also applies in addition to the occupied vehicle’s MedPay.
Statewide, around 12.5% of Alaskan drivers do not have insurance. That equates to around one in eight drivers, which is a relatively high risk. Following a crash with an uninsured or underinsured individual, injured parties without UM and UIM Insurance, must sue the at-fault driver for damages and injuries.

Just like the names suggest, both UM and UIM Insurance coverage apply to different situations.
Uninsured coverage applies immediately when an at-fault driver has no liability insurance at all.

Auto Liability Insurance, or third-party insurance, pays for damages and injuries to other people (third parties) if you’re at fault in an accident. It covers bodily injury and property damage. Auto Liability Insurance is also referred to as auto liability coverage, broken down into Bodily Injury Liability (BI) and Property Damage Liability (PD).

Bodily Injury (BI) Liability: Pays for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering for injured third parties.

Property Damage (PD) Liability: Pays for repairs to the other person’s car, fences, mailboxes, or other property you might damage with a vehicle.

Auto Liability Insurance protects you when claims arise from your driving. If you lose control of your vehicle and hurt somebody, this insurance is what stands between you and financial hardship or bankruptcy.

With winter driving hazards in mind, it is time to review your Auto Liability Insurance. Most Alaskans first buy automobile insurance when we are “young and poor.” Our interaction with an insurance sales agent goes something like this: “I have no money. Sell me the cheapest coverage that allows let me to legally drive in Alaska.” As a result, insurance sales agents normally sell the “statutory minimum” “50/100” liability insurance.

Statutory Minimum Is Not Enough

Problems arise when we get older. We are (hopefully) not so poor. Living the American Dream, most Alaskans work and save money. We have a home and are raising families. Through hard work and determination, we have a bit of “heel on our shoes.” Yet, Alaskans continue to drive with the same cheap Auto Liability Insurance that we bought as kids…

If you are over 35 (and certainly if you are over 45) it is time to update your Auto Liability Insurance. Here are our nuts-and-bolts suggestions, after 30 years of reviewing automobile insurance policies. First, talk to your insurance sales agent. An insurance sales agent is trained to help you understand how much insurance is appropriate in your circumstances. It is their job to ask you questions, evaluate your situation, and make informed suggestions. Furthermore, this service costs you nothing. Call your insurance sales agent right now and schedule an “Insurance Review Meeting.”

Auto Liability Insurance Recommendations

If you really don’t want to ask your insurance sales agent (or don’t have one), we recommend 100/300 (that is $100K per person, and $300K per accident) as the absolute minimum Auto Liability Insurance Alaskans should buy before getting on Alaskan roads. We grade 100/300 as C+ coverage. It is far better than 50/100. At the same time, it does not provide much beyond minimal financial protection to Alaskans.

The next step up is 250/500 or $250K per person, and $500K per accident. We grade 250/500 as B+ Auto Liability Insurance coverage. It provides much more reasonable financial protection.

When deciding how much Auto Liability Insurance insurance to buy, the key is realizing you are driving about 4,000 pounds of steel at 55+ MPH on icy Alaskan roads. If you lose control and injure another person be sure you have enough liability insurance to pay the other persons’ medical bills, lost wages, pain, suffering, and disability. If you don’t buy enough liability insurance to cover these claims, the balance of the injured persons’ claims come out of your pocket.

How Much Does It Cost?

IMPORTANT: The cost of Auto Liability Insurance is NOT linear. In other words, 100/300 does NOT cost twice as much as 50/100. Usually, doubling your 50/100 liability insurance should cost you less than $75 every six months. The expensive insurance is the 50/100 statutory minimum coverage that you already bought. Think of it this way… can you financially recover from the significant costs of bodily injury and property damage following an accident without sufficient Auto Liability Insurance?

Winter Auto Insurance Review – A New Year is upon us and winter weather makes driving more dangerous. Review your winter auto insurance needs. It is essential to have enough insurance in case of a car accident.

Winter Auto Insurance Review And Alaska Requirements: Alaska law requires liability auto insurance for drivers. Alaska law states that drivers must buy at least $50,000 of bodily injury coverage per person and $100,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident. Drivers must also buy $25,000 in property damage protection.

In addition, drivers must prove they have auto insurance at all times. Failure to provide proof of insurance may result in a license suspension.

Why A Winter Auto Insurance Review Is Important For Alaskans

Although Alaska requires minimum auto insurance levels, many crashes cause damages greater than minimum requirements cover. For example, a severe crash may result in long-term injuries. Such injuries reduce a victim’s ability to earn a living or limit quality of life. When this occurs, the injured person may require insurance beyond what an at-fault driver’s policy insures. A winter auto insurance review for additional coverage levels will help you and your family weather the financial loss.

Additional Insurance

Companies offer additional insurance beyond what is a requirement, such as uninsured (UM), under-insured (UIM) and medical payments coverage. These types of coverage are beyond the minimum and protect you in cases where damages exceed at-fault parties insurance available. Contact your insurance sales agent today and ask them to sit down with you for a Winter Auto Insurance Review.

It is worthwhile to contact a personal injury attorney if you have been injured in an automobile accident. An attorney will review evidence in a case to establish negligence of a third-party causing injuries and assist in obtaining information about insurance coverages. If successful in court, a driver with injuries may be able to win compensation for medical bills, lost wages and other reasonable long-term care costs.

When The Unthinkable Happens

After a serious automobile crash, contact an injury attorney. The attorney gathers evidence in your case to establish the negligence of a third-party causing injuries. If successful, the driver with injuries may be compensated for medical bills, lost wages, and other reasonable long-term care costs. A winter auto insurance review will make all the difference in your financial recovery. Please call Johnson Law to discuss your auto insurance case: (907)277-3090 or use our online contact form.

Sterling Highway – A Ninilchik woman died last week in a single-vehicle rollover on the Sterling Highway, according to the Alaska State Troopers. Cheryl Komakhuk, 67, was driving a Jeep southbound. She lost control on the icy roadway and rolled the vehicle into the ditch. Although troopers and first responders dispatched immediately, Ms. Komakhuk, the sole occupant of the Jeep, died at the scene.

Sterling Highway Dangers

As most Alaskans know, many roads throughout the state present unique challenges. Simply put, Alaskan roads, including the Sterling Highway, have a lot in common when it comes to the level of danger they present.

In the winter months, Alaskan roads may have extremely poor visibility making travel nearly impossible. Wildlife crossings are another dangerous part of the Alaskan road ecosystem. Animals can dart out onto roads without warning at times.

During the summer, most Alaskans roads suffer from congestion due to tourists. This leads to increases in multi-vehicle accidents each year. Finally, many of these roads have stretches that are over an hour away from any sort of emergency service. Thus, emergency assistance could be delayed.

Auto Accident Victims

Ms. Komakhuk’s family are also victims of the crash and may be entitled to compensation for economic and non-economic losses. They will need to open an Estate for Ms. Komakhuk. In addition, a Personal Representative must be appointed by the court to act on behalf of the Estate. Insurance may be available to pay for funeral expenses and other losses. The family would be well-served by speaking to an Alaska Personal Injury Attorney. The attorney will investigate and advise whether the family has a potential wrongful death claim for this Sterling Highway tragedy.

Homeowner policies protect not only your home, but also your assets in case of an accident. Johnson Law recommends Alaskans buy Homeowner Insurance protection. Buy as much as you can afford. If you wonder what homeowner policies cover and why you need homeowner insurance, you are not alone.

What Is Homeowner Insurance?

Primarily, Homeowner Insurance is financial protection if your home is accidentally damaged. Most Home policies cover five areas in case of an accident:

The inside of your home;

The outside of your home;

Theft of personal property;

Garages, sheds and other buildings on your property; and

A person’s injury on your property.

Homeowner Insurance protects your investment: Even if you own your home outright, homeowner’s insurance is crucial for safeguarding your property from various risks, including fire, theft, and natural disasters. The Alaska Department of Commerce provides an comprehensive Consumer Guide to Homeowner Insurance.

Homeowner Insurance provides peace of mind: Beyond the financial aspect, homeowner’s insurance provides peace of mind, protecting you against unforeseen events.

Are Homeowner Policies Required In Alaska?

Alaska, like most states, does not have a law mandating homeowner’s insurance. While Alaska does not mandate homeowner policies by state law, it is typically required by mortgage lenders. Even without a mortgage, it’s highly advisable to have homeowner’s insurance to protect your investment from potential damage or loss.

What Does Homeowner Insurance Cover?

Homeowner policies cover costs after events such as fires and storms. Some key items covered by most policies include:

Your home’s foundation, walls, and roof;

Barns, tool sheds, and fences;

Appliances, electronics, and furniture damaged by a covered event;

Medical bills for a personal injury on your property; and

Legal fees related to an accident or injury on your property.

Homeowner insurance may also cover expenses, such as hotel and meals if you are unable to live in your home after a covered event.

What Is Not Covered?

Many Homeowner policies have coverage limits. Most policies excludes residents. In other words, homeowner insurance does not cover the owner and family members. Read your policy carefully. For example, if you see your Home Insurance does not cover fire, ask your insurance company about fire coverage.

If you have questions about Homeowner Insurance, call your insurance sales agent. After reviewing your coverage, they will recommend the best coverages for your Alaska assets. Protect yourself and your family.

Umbrella Policies are a secondary layer of insurance and acts like an “umbrella” to protect the insured as as well as the injured parties. Though not common in discussions, these policies benefit an insured by adding another layer of protection to meet insurance needs. This coverage is in addition to other Alaskan insurance policies such as auto, renter, and homeowner insurances.

Additional Liability Protection For Alaskans

If you are in a situation where you are liable for another person’s injuries and claims, an umbrella policy is beneficial. After using all available primary insurance coverage, the umbrella policy kicks in to protect you and your assets from excess liability judgments. That means if someone suffers injuries due to your actions, the umbrella policy helps take care of the injured party beyond your primary insurance limits. Additionally, the insurance protects your assets from liability claims and lawsuits.

Help With Excess Damages

If you suffer severe injuries due to someone else’s negligence, ensure your attorney asks about umbrella coverage which may be available for the at-fault party. For example, you are in a car accident suffering severe injuries and there is not enough auto insurance to cover your medical bills and claims. An experienced attorney will conduct thorough research to identify additional coverage such as an umbrella policy on the at-fault party. The additional insurance may be helpful recovering losses caused by the accident.

Other Types Of Claims Umbrella Policies May Cover

In addition to liability protection, umbrella coverage may help with professional liability, lawsuits, property damage and other unpredictable situations. Adding the coverage to your insurance protection will help injured parties in case of serious accidents. One never knows when an accident may happen. It is important to plan ahead in case of the unexpected.

Questions About Umbrella Policies In Alaska?

If you have questions about Umbrella Insurance, call your auto insurance sales agent. They will provide a review of your coverage and make recommendations to ensure you are covered Alaska. Protect yourself and your family. Review your auto insurance and buy as much Liability, Uninsured, Under-Insured and Medical Payment insurance coverage as you can afford. Then ask your agent about an Umbrella Policy.

Are You Covered Alaska? Do you have enough auto insurance to protect you in case of a car accident? The summer season is upon us. Summer driving presents a unique set of challenges compared to other seasons. Protect yourself and your loved ones. It’s time for an auto insurance review.

Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements In Alaska

The state of Alaska requires drivers carry liability insurance. Alaskan Law states that drivers carry at least $50,000 of bodily injury coverage per person and $100,000 of bodily injury or Liability coverage per accident. Drivers also must carry $25,000 in property damage protection.

Although Alaska has set minimum levels of auto insurance. Many crashes cause damages exceeding those minimum requirements. For example, a serious crash may result in long-term injuries. These kind of injuries may reduce a victim’s ability to earn a living and limit his or her quality of life. When this occurs, the injured person may need financial help beyond the at-fault driver’s policy limits. Our advice is to review your insurance and then buy as much Liability insurance coverage as you can afford.

Increase Your Insurance Protection

ALL Auto Insurance Companies offer insurance coverage beyond Alaska’s minimum requirements. For example, Uninsured (UM), Under-Insured (UIM), Medical Payments and Umbrella Policies. These types of coverage are beyond the minimum and protect you in cases where damages exceed at-fault parties insurance available.

Proof Of Insurance – Are You Covered Alaska?

Drivers must also carry proof of insurance at all times. Failure to provide proof of insurance may result in a license suspension. Cars may also be impounded for failure to provide proof of insurance. Whether at fault for a crash or not, proof of insurance is a requirement. Drivers who do not have insurance may lose the right to drive in Alaska.

Questions About Coverage?

If you have questions when you review your auto insurance, call your auto insurance sales agent. They will provide a review of your coverage and make recommendations to ensure you are covered Alaska. Protect yourself and your family. Review your auto insurance and buy as much Uninsured, Under-Insured and Medical Payment insurance coverage as you can afford. Then ask your agent about an Umbrella Policy.

Auto Insurance – Alaska requires auto insurance, protecting the public from uninsured drivers with both mandatory insurance laws and financial responsibility requirements. The laws provide the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) rights to remove drivers from the road for failure to maintain required coverage.

Violators can lose their license until reaching a settlement with all parties in the crash. That means that having auto insurance is the easiest way to avoid losing a license for an extended period. It is also important to file claims so that uninsured drivers are held accountable to the law.

Alaskan Law requires Alaskan Drivers to have Liability Insurance

The minimum requirement for liability auto insurance in the state is $25,000 property damage and $50,000/$100,000 for bodily injury or death. Personal injury claims, especially for multiple parties, often exceeds insurance minimums. It is important to buy more insurance when possible, instead of not having enough insurance coverage.

Failure to maintain the required auto insurance may lead to the suspension of your driver’s license.

In the Municipality of Anchorage, if you are unable to provide proof of coverage, your vehicle may be impounded. In such instances, you would need to reach out to the Anchorage Police Department to learn about the procedures for retrieving your vehicle.

If you are in an auto accident with an uninsured driver, you have options to cover injuries, lost wages and other claims. Additionally, your own insurance may help cover costs of auto accidents. Injured parties may also file a civil case to have the negligent party without auto insurance pay for the victim’s injuries, lost wages and other claims expenses out of pocket.

Resident Relative Claims – what does that term mean? Claims asserted by the spouses and other relatives who share a residence with an insured person are Resident Relative claims. A Resident Relative receives special status in an insurance policies’ language. In some cases, a Resident Relative is automatically insured.

Claim Example

A family called me about their son, “Jason” – a young man (16 years old) who was badly injured during a single-vehicle roll-over. The driver, Harvey, lost control of his vehicle and rolled off Chena Hot Springs Rd. Jason was not wearing his seatbelt. Harvey’s auto insurance company told Jason’s family: “Jason’s injuries are Jason’s own fault. Jason should have worn a seatbelt. Go away.”

Jason’s medical and surgical bills totaled more than $129,000. Jason will live with 60+ years of pain and limited mobility because of this wreck. The insurance company declined to provide any help for Jason and his family.

Proving Liability

Proving the liability claim denied by the insurance company: We gathered the police report, visited the scene, spoke with Harvey, measured and photographed the pickup truck, located the pickup’s “black box” and performed appropriate legal research. Initially, we confirmed: (1) that Harvey was negligent because the Rules of The Road require drivers to stay within their lane unless it is safe to leave it (13 AAC 02.085); and (2) that Harvey’s insurance company was only partially correct: Any part of Jason’s injuries caused by Jason’s failure to wear a seatbelt were Jason’s responsibility, not Harvey’s. Hutchins v. Schwartz, 724 P.2d 1194, 1199 (Alaska 1986).

Next, we focused on Jason’s injuries and whether they were caused not wearing a seatbelt.

We hired an Expert to investigate whether the lack of a seatbelt contributed to Jason’s injuries. The Expert performed extensive tests. He evaluated damage of Harvey’s pickup. The Expert’s report showed the insurance company was wrong. The Expert concluded: “No. Jason’s failure to wear a seatbelt in no way caused or made Jason’s injuries worse.” There was no connection between Jason’s failure to wear a seatbelt and Jason’s injuries. The crushed roof of the pickup impacted the pickup’s bench seatback. Because the roof was so badly crushed, if Jason had been wearing a seatbelt, he might have died in the crash. In other words, Jason was eligible for the insurance that Harvey’s and Jason’s families had purchased to protect them.

Resident Relative Claim

After we put together Jason’s case, Harvey’s insurance company paid Jason full liability “Policy Limits” of $100,000 under Harvey’s auto policy. It also paid Jason full Underinsured Motorist “Policy Limits” of another $100,000.

Finally, Jason’s family purchased auto insurance. They purchased both Uninsured Underinsured Insurance and Medical Payment Insurance. The family policy paid Jason an Underinsured Motorist “Policy Limit” of $50,000 as his mother’s Resident Relative. The family policy also paid Jason’s medical bills. The insurance also paid for the vocational rehabilitation Jason needs.

Further, it seems what happens next is an unending blur of flashing lights, emergency response, and answering questions. When the driver unconscious or seriously injured, it is even more difficult.

After A Car Crash

Afterward, you will think about the wreck. Questions will arise: Why me? Why my friend, family member, spouse, or partner? What could we have done differently?

During your recovery as a car crash passenger, many people will tell you that you are “lucky” and should be grateful. At the center of importance is understanding you have been injured and have every right to be angry. In addition, you might spend hours, days, even weeks obsessing over the wreck. You may be angry. Furthermore, you might feel guilty.

First – Get proper medical care for physical injuries. It is critical to work with your doctors for full recovery from physical injuries if you are a car crash passenger.

Second – Seek care for injuries such as anger, guilt and fear. Find a therapist you like and fit appointments into your schedule. Talking with a specialist about your anger, pain and suffering as a car crash passenger is important to healing. A good counselor will suggest therapy that fits your needs.

Third – Ask for help recovering what you lost as a car crash passenger. Call an attorney and ask questions. An experienced personal injury attorney will review all resources, including insurance policies, to determine how best to recover costs for your treatment and other losses. Car crash losses may include medical bills, wages, therapy, prescriptions and more.

Medical Payments Coverage For Car Crash Passengers

Medical Payments (MedPay) covers medical bills and health insurance copays or deductibles for treatment related to injuries from a crash. MedPay insurance provides coverage to the driver and the passengers after a car accident no matter who was at fault.

Most importantly, MedPay provides coverage when you or your family members get hit by a vehicle in someone else’s car. When adding MedPay to your policy, ask the following questions:

Does your health insurance have high deductibles?

Are you concerned about paying out of pocket for medical expenses if you’re in an auto accident?

Revisiting both your auto insurance and health insurance coverage are helpful when determining how much MedPay is needed for you and your family.

Finally, a car crash is frightening. If you are a car crash passenger, ask for help. The right help ensures better recovery from your injuries.

Home ownership can be both rewarding and challenging. Understanding homeowner insurance can provide relief in stressful situations. People who do not have homeowner insurance on their property risk exposing themselves and property to personal law suits. It is important to make sure that you have enough coverage to protect not only your home but also your assets in case of an accident.

Types Of Homeowner Insurance Policies

There are different types of coverage under each kind of homeowner insurance policy. The two most common types of homeowner policies are HO-2 and HO-3. A HO-2 policy is a named-peril policy meaning the insurance covers specific events as defined in the policy. A HO-3 policy is an open-peril policy meaning the policy covers most events except exclusions the policy states.

A HO-5 policy is the broadest of types, covering both dwelling and personal property events, except the listed exclusions. The HO-5 type homeowner insurance policy is not as common as a HO-2 or HO-3 policy.

In addition to types of insurance, there are basic standards homeowner policies cover in many cases.

Standard Coverage

Reconstruction or repair of the home is standard for homeowner insurance policies. Policies normally include the yard and attached structures, like a garage. Some instances are not included, for example floods are generally a separate policy for specific properties. In many cases, coverage includes unattached structures. If you have an unattached garage, shed or barn check your policy for coverage.

Personal belongings coverage is separate for most homeowner insurance policies. Personal belongings, like furniture or clothing, falls under this type of coverage. Replacing personal items falls under this kind of coverage for events like fire or theft.

Liability homeowner insurance coverage protects people visiting your home and may apply if you accidentally hurt someone while away from your home. This coverage may apply in instances like a dog bite or someone falling while at your house.

Medical Payments coverage pays medical bills for people with injuries from an event. This coverage is in addition to liability coverage. Medical Payments coverage covers an injured person regardless of who is at fault.

If you are a homeowner, read your homeowner insurance policy and ask questions to understand it. If someone is injured on or off your property, provide a copy of your homeowner policy to your attorney. An experienced attorney can help you research your homeowners policy for coverage.

Homeowner Insurance

Homeowner insurance includes the structure, personal items, living expenses in an emergency and liability coverage. Different situations may trigger homeowner liability insurance, such as dog bites, slip and fall accidents or carbon monoxide poisoning. It is important to have liability coverage when owning a home not only so others have protection but so do you.

How Homeowner Insurance Protects You

If someone suffers an injury at your home, you can be held legally liable in some cases. Concerns include things like medical payments, wage loss, pain, suffering and disability. Additionally, if you are visiting someone else’s home and suffer injuries due to that person’s negligence, you may be able to file a claim under their homeowner insurance policy to help recover loss. If you suffer injuries at another person’s home, ask them about liability homeowner insurance.

Medical Payments Insurance explained. Many people consider how much auto insurance coverage they may need, balanced against its cost. Yet, most people don’t think much about the different kinds of auto insurance available to them. Most don’t know medical payments insurance is even available. Unfortunately, despite being legally mandatory, many Alaskan drivers fail to carry any auto insurance – much less the right amounts. One important type of automobile insurance is called “Medical Payments” coverage. It is just as important as Liability and Uninsured Motorist coverage. Alaskan residents can protect themselves by purchasing as much as they can afford – at least $25,000 per person. $100,000 per person is even better. It’s cheap protection.

UNDERSTANDING MEDICAL PAYMENTS INSURANCE

Generally speaking, medical payments insurance covers the cost of medical expenses arising from an automobile accident – regardless of who is at fault. It can also cover the following expenses that may arise out of a car crash – even if you are nowhere near your insured vehicle:

Medical Transport;

Emergency Room Expenses

Radiology – X-rays / CT Scans / MRIs

Anesthesia;

Surgeon fees;

Medical facility / hospital fees;

Prostheses;

Doctor’s visits;

Dental care required as a result of a car crash; and

Funeral expenses.

It covers all of your occupants and is optional in Alaska. Sadly, many people either decline the coverage, or do not know they have the option of purchasing Medical Payments coverage. Medical payments insurance can be used directly as primary coverage for expenses, or as a supplement to health care coverage you already have – paying co-pays and deductibles when you use your health insurance. Different policies take a different approach to this. Nonetheless, having medical payments insurance offers peace of mind that all expenses will be covered.

HOW TO GET MEDICAL PAYMENTS INSURANCE

The good news is, medical payments insurance can be added to your car insurance policy at any time. The cost of it is directly proportional to the amount of coverage you select per incident. Depending on your insurance policy and the size of coverage you choose, the insurance can be as low as $2.00 – $7.00 per month. This kind of coverage costs very little. Hopefully you never need it, but it ensures occupants receive the medical care they need.

Is it time to review Your Medical Payments (MedPay) Auto Insurance? Most of us buy first automobile insurance when we are “young and poor.” Our interaction with an insurance sales agent goes something like this: “I have no money. Sell me the cheapest coverage you have to let me legally drive in Alaska.” As a result, insurance sales agents normally sell us “statutory minimum” “50/100” Liability insurance. We may or may not even know there is more protection available such as U/UIM and Medical Payments.

Medical Payments Insurance

Medical Payments or “MedPay” insurance normally pays for medical bills arising from an automobile accident. Therefore, it covers you and all occupants of your vehicle. And while it is not mandatory under Alaskan law – it should be. In fact, many people have no MedPay or only $5,000. This is not enough.

How Much Does It Cost

I recommend you buy $100K of “MedPay” insurance. It should cost between $50 and $75 every six months. Furthermore, People with sufficient MedPay rarely get bankrupted by medical bills and aren’t harassed by collection agencies after a Motor Vehicle Accident. Equally important, it is cheap peace of mind. Buy all you can afford.

BOTTOM LINE

If you or a loved one gets hurt in a car crash, be sure to coordinate payment of your medical bills between your health insurer and your Medical Payment insurer. DO NOT let your Medical Payments insurer exhaust your benefit up front. This is a common mistake.

Insurance Coverage Review – winter weather driving is dangerous. Review your auto insurance needs and prepare for winter driving. It is essential to have enough insurance in a car accident.

Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements

Alaskan law requires liability insurance for drivers. Alaska statutes states that drivers must buy at least $50,000 of liability bodily injury coverage per person and $100,000 of liability bodily injury coverage per accident. Drivers must also buy $25,000 in liability property damage protection. Drivers must also prove they have insurance at all times. Failure to provide proof of insurance may result in a license suspension.

Statutory minimum does not mean fully insured. Although Alaska requires minimum levels of auto insurance, many crashes cause damages greater than minimum requirements cover. For example, a severe crash may result in long-term injuries. Such injuries reduce a victim’s ability to earn a living or limit quality of life. When this occurs, the injured person may require insurance beyond what an at-fault driver’s policy insures.

Companies offer insurance beyond state requirements, such as uninsured (UM), underinsured (UIM), and medical payments coverage (MedPay). These insurances should be part of every insurance coverage review. They protect you when damages exceed the at-fault parties’ insurance available.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Insurance

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage, usually called U/UIM – protects you (and all occupants of your vehicle and family members) when you are run over by an Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist – usually a drunk driver. If you (and your family) are badly hurt by an uninsured or underinsured motorist, this insurance stands in the place of the other driver and pays your claims, just as the other driver’s liability insurance would pay them … if the drunk had any insurance. It is staggering how many Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist we have on Alaskan roads. U/UIM is VERY important insurance for you and your family.

Prepare for winter weather driving. Buy at least as much U/UIM insurance as you buy liability insurance. Consider buying more to better protect your family. This insurance coverage may be all that is available to address a lifetime of medical bills, unemployment and pain. I recommend at least 100/300 coverage. It is far better than 50/100, but it does not provide much beyond minimal protection. The next step up is 250/500 or $250K per person, and $500K per accident.

IMPORTANT: U/UIM insurance is usually less expensive than liability insurance. It is not linearly priced. In other words, doubling your U/UIM coverage will usually NOT double your premium payment. It is smart to think: “How much is my life – and my family’s lives – worth?”

Medical Payments Insurance

Medical Payments Coverage or MedPay insurance normally pays for medical bills arising from an automobile accident. It covers you and all occupants of your vehicle. And while it is not mandatory under Alaskan law – it should be. Many people have no MedPay or only $5,000. This is not enough.

How Much Will I Pay for MedPay Coverage? We recommend you buy $100K of MedPay insurance. It should cost between $50 and $75 every six months. People with good MedPay coverage rarely get bankrupted by medical bills and aren’t harassed by collection agencies after a Motor Vehicle Accident. It is cheap peace of mind. Buy all you can afford.

Prepare for winter weather driving with a full auto insurance coverage review. It is essential to have enough insurance in a car accident. After a serious automobile crash, contact an injury attorney. The attorney gathers evidence in your case to establish the negligence of a third-party causing injuries. If you are a victim of a motor vehicle collision, you have legal rights to hold negligent parties accountable. Including parties who don’t meet Alaska insurance requirements.
