<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-is-your-auto-insurance-ready-for-summer-travel"><strong>Is Your Auto Insurance Ready for Summer Travel?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Alaska Summer Auto Insurance coverage review – Summer is one of the busiest driving seasons in Alaska. Additionally, increased tourism, road construction, recreational travel, motorcycles, RVs, and wildlife activity create unique risks for drivers. Before heading out on Alaska’s highways, every driver should complete an insurance coverage review to ensure they have adequate liability insurance, uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage, and Medical Payments (MedPay) coverage.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-why-alaska-drivers-should-conduct-an-alaska-summer-auto-insurance-review"><strong>Why Alaska Drivers Should Conduct An Alaska Summer Auto Insurance Review</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Many Alaskans think of winter as the most dangerous driving season. While snow and ice certainly create hazards, summer presents its own risks.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">For instance, as temperatures rise and daylight hours increase, Alaska roads become crowded with:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Tourists unfamiliar with local roads</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Recreational vehicles (RVs)</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Motorcycles</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Commercial tour buses</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Construction equipment</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Bicyclists and pedestrians</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Wildlife crossing highways</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Summer is also peak vacation season. Therefore, families travel long distances to fishing destinations, national parks, campgrounds, and remote communities throughout Alaska.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Before beginning your summer adventures, take time to review your auto insurance coverage. The right policy can protect your family from significant financial losses if an accident occurs.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-what-are-alaska-s-minimum-auto-insurance-requirements"><strong>What Are Alaska’s Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Alaska law requires drivers to carry liability insurance.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">In summary, the minimum required coverage includes:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">$50,000 bodily injury liability coverage per person</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">$100,000 bodily injury liability coverage per accident</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">$25,000 property damage liability coverage per accident</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Drivers must also be able to provide proof of insurance when requested.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Furthermore, failure to maintain insurance coverage can result in penalties that may include license suspension and other consequences.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">However, minimum coverage does not necessarily mean adequate protection.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-why-minimum-insurance-often-isn-t-enough"><strong>Why Minimum Insurance Often Isn’t Enough</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Many serious automobile accidents involve damages that far exceed Alaska’s minimum insurance requirements.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">In fact, a single collision can result in:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Emergency medical treatment</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Hospitalization</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Surgery</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Rehabilitation</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Lost wages</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Future medical expenses</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Permanent disability</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Reduced earning capacity</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Vehicle repair and replacement costs have also increased dramatically in recent years.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">In a serious accident, minimum liability limits can be exhausted quickly, leaving injured victims without enough compensation to cover their losses.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">An insurance coverage review can help determine whether your current limits truly protect your financial future.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-summer-driving-risks-unique-to-alaska"><strong>Summer Driving Risks Unique to Alaska</strong></h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-increased-tourist-traffic"><strong>Increased Tourist Traffic</strong></h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Every summer, visitors from around the world travel Alaska’s highways.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">As a result, many tourists are unfamiliar with:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Mountain driving</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Gravel roads</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Wildlife crossings</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Rapidly changing weather conditions</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Long rural stretches between services</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">These factors can increase the likelihood of accidents.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-road-construction-zones"><strong>Road Construction Zones</strong></h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Summer is road construction season across Alaska.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Drivers frequently encounter:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Reduced speed zones</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Lane shifts</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Uneven pavement</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Construction equipment</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Flaggers directing traffic</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Construction zone accidents often cause serious injuries and may involve multiple potentially responsible parties.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-motorcycle-accidents"><strong>Motorcycle Accidents</strong></h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Warm weather brings more motorcycles onto Alaska roads.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Motorcyclists have little physical protection during a crash, making injuries more severe and increasing the need for adequate insurance coverage.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-wildlife-collisions"><strong>Wildlife Collisions</strong></h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Moose, caribou, bears, and other wildlife remain active throughout the summer months.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">A collision with a large animal can cause catastrophic vehicle damage and serious injuries.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-what-is-uninsured-and-underinsured-motorist-coverage-um-uim"><strong>What Is Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM/UIM)?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph" id="h-uninsured-and-underinsured-motorist-coverage-protects-you-when-the-at-fault-driver-has-no-insurance-or-insufficient-insurance-to-cover-your-damages">Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or insufficient insurance to cover your damages.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">To illustrate, UM/UIM coverage may help pay for:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Medical expenses</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Lost income</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Future treatment costs</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Pain and suffering</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Permanent injury damages</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Unfortunately, many drivers carry only minimum coverage, while others drive without insurance entirely.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">If you suffer severe injuries and the at-fault driver lacks sufficient insurance, your UM/UIM coverage can become one of your most valuable protections.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-how-much-um-uim-coverage-should-alaska-families-carry"><strong>How Much UM/UIM Coverage Should Alaska Families Carry?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Insurance professionals and injury attorneys often recommend purchasing UM/UIM limits that match or exceed your liability coverage.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">For instance, common coverage options include:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">50/100</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">100/300</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">250/500</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Higher umbrella policy limits</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Many families find that increasing UM/UIM coverage provides substantial protection for a relatively modest increase in premium costs.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">When reviewing your policy, consider how much financial protection your family would need after a life-changing injury.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-what-is-medical-payments-coverage-medpay"><strong>What Is Medical Payments Coverage (MedPay)?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Medical Payments Coverage, commonly known as MedPay, helps pay accident-related medical expenses regardless of who caused the collision.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Benefits may include payment for:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Ambulance transportation</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Emergency room treatment</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Diagnostic testing</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Hospital stays</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Follow-up medical care</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">MedPay typically covers both the driver and passengers in the insured vehicle.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Unlike many other forms of coverage, MedPay benefits are often available immediately after an accident, helping families avoid medical debt while insurance claims are being resolved.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-why-medpay-is-especially-valuable-during-summer-travel"><strong>Why MedPay Is Especially Valuable During Summer Travel</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Many Alaska families spend considerable time on the road during the summer months.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Whether traveling to:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Denali</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Kenai Peninsula</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Valdez</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Homer</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Seward</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Fairbanks</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Remote fishing destinations</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">the risk of being involved in a serious accident increases simply because more miles are being driven, making an Alaska summer auto insurance coverage review even more critical</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Strong MedPay coverage can provide immediate assistance with medical bills following an unexpected collision far from home.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-alaska-summer-auto-insurance-coverage-checklist"><strong>Alaska Summer Auto Insurance Coverage Checklist</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Before your next road trip, review your policy and confirm:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Liability limits are adequate</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">UM/UIM coverage protects your family</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">MedPay limits are sufficient</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">All drivers in your household are listed properly</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Vehicles are correctly insured</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Emergency roadside coverage is available if needed</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Policy information is current and accessible</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">A simple annual review can uncover gaps in coverage before an accident occurs.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-what-should-you-do-after-a-serious-summer-car-accident-in-alaska"><strong>What Should You Do After a Serious Summer Car Accident in Alaska?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">If you are injured in an automobile accident:</p>

<ol start="1" class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Seek immediate medical care.</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Contact law enforcement.</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Gather photographs and evidence if possible.</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Obtain witness information.</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Notify your insurance company.</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Consult an experienced Alaska personal injury attorney.</li>
</ol>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Speaking to a skilled law firm will help. Notably, an experienced Alaska personal injury attorney can investigate the crash, identify all available insurance policies, preserve critical evidence, and pursue compensation from negligent parties.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">In some cases, multiple insurance policies may apply, including liability insurance, UM/UIM coverage, MedPay benefits, commercial policies, and umbrella coverage.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-protect-your-family-with-an-alaska-summer-auto-insurance-coverage-review"><strong>Protect Your Family With An Alaska Summer Auto Insurance Coverage Review</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Before setting out on your next adventure, take time to review your insurance coverage. In short, the few minutes you spend evaluating your policy today could protect your family from significant financial hardship tomorrow.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Adequate liability insurance, strong UM/UIM coverage, and sufficient MedPay benefits can provide critical protection when a serious accident occurs.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-what-every-driver-needs-to-know-after-a-car-accident"><strong>What Every Driver Needs to Know After a Car Accident</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Alaska Insurance Requirements – If you drive in Alaska, understanding Alaska insurance requirements is essential. <a href="https://alaskabar.org/youth/cars-and-weapons/driving-in-alaska/financial-responsibility-and-mandatory-insurance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">State law requires every driver to carry minimum liability insurance coverage</a> and provide proof of insurance when involved in certain motor vehicle accidents. Consequently, failing to comply can result in license suspension, financial penalties, and significant legal consequences.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Whether you are involved in a minor collision or a serious crash, knowing your responsibilities can help protect your driving privileges and preserve your legal rights.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>What Insurance Is Required in Alaska?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Alaska law requires all drivers to maintain liability insurance coverage. The minimum required coverage limits are:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size"><strong>$50,000</strong> for bodily injury or death to one person</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size"><strong>$100,000</strong> for bodily injury or death per accident</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size"><strong>$25,000</strong> for property damage per accident</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">This coverage is commonly referred to as <strong>50/100/25 liability insurance coverage</strong>.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Liability insurance helps pay for injuries and property damage you cause to others in an accident. While Alaska insurance requirements are set at 50/100/25 liability insurance coverage – this may not be enough. However, minimum coverage limits may not fully protect your personal assets after a serious collision. Drivers should periodically review their policies with a licensed insurance professional to ensure they have adequate protection.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>Why Alaska Insurance Requirements Matter</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Maintaining proper insurance coverage is more than a legal obligation – it helps protect everyone on Alaska’s roads.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Without liability insurance coverage, drivers may face:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Driver’s license suspension</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Increased insurance premiums</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Personal financial liability for accident damages</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Difficulty registering or operating a vehicle</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Potential legal action from injured parties</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Even a single accident can create significant financial exposure if your coverage is inadequate.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>What Are Alaska’s Insurance Requirements After a Crash?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Following a serious motor vehicle accident, Alaska law requires drivers to provide proof of insurance to the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">A crash is generally considered serious if it involves:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Bodily injury to any person</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">A fatality</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Property damage exceeding $501</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Importantly, <strong>all drivers involved in the crash must provide proof of liability insurance coverage</strong>, regardless of who caused the collision.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Even if another driver was entirely at fault, you must still comply with Alaska’s reporting requirements.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>When Must Proof of Insurance Be Submitted?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Drivers involved in a qualifying accident must submit proof of insurance to the DMV within <strong>15 days</strong> of the collision.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">This requirement is separate from:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Reporting the accident to law enforcement</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Filing an insurance claim</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Providing information to your insurance company</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">In many cases, the investigating police officer will provide a Certificate of Insurance form at the accident scene. These forms are also available through Alaska DMV offices and state resources.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Failing to submit proof of insurance that meet Alaska insurance requirements within the required timeframe may lead to severe penalties as a result.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>What Should You Do After a Car Accident in Alaska?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">After ensuring everyone is safe and emergency services have been contacted if necessary, take the following steps:</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>1. Gather Evidence</strong></h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Collect as much information as possible, including:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Photos of vehicle damage</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Photos of the accident scene</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Road and weather conditions</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Contact information for witnesses</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Driver and insurance information from all parties involved</li>
</ul>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>2. Seek Medical Attention</strong></h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Even if injuries seem minor, seek medical evaluation promptly. Some injuries, including concussions, traumatic brain injuries, and soft tissue injuries, may not immediately appear.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Prompt medical treatment also creates documentation that may be important for future insurance or legal claims.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>3. Notify Your Insurance Company</strong></h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Most insurance policies require prompt notification following an accident.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">When filing your claim, provide:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Photographs</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Medical records and bills</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Towing receipts</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Repair estimates</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Police reports</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Witness statements</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Providing complete documentation can help expedite the claims process.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>4. Be Careful With Recorded Statements</strong></h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">If you are experiencing pain, confusion, memory problems, or difficulty concentrating after a collision, avoid giving recorded statements until you have received appropriate medical care and understand the extent of your injuries.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Serious injuries can affect memory, judgment, and communication. Protecting your health should be the priority.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>What Happens If You Do Not Meet Alaska Insurance Requirements?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Alaska imposes strict penalties on drivers who fail to maintain required insurance coverage or fail to provide proof of coverage after a qualifying accident.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Potential penalties include:</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>First Offense</strong></h4>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Driver’s license suspension for 90 days</li>
</ul>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>Second Offense</strong></h4>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Driver’s license suspension for one year</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">These penalties may apply if:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">You do not carry the required insurance coverage.</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">You cannot prove you had insurance at the time of the crash.</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">You fail to submit proof of insurance to the DMV within 15 days.</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">The consequences can affect your ability to work, travel, and maintain affordable insurance rates in the future.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size"><strong>What If the Other Driver Was Uninsured?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Unfortunately, not every driver follows Alaska insurance laws.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">If you are injured by an uninsured or underinsured driver, you may still have options to recover compensation for:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Medical expenses</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Lost income</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Pain and suffering</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Property damage</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Future medical treatment</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Depending on the circumstances, compensation may be available through your own insurance coverage or through legal action against the responsible party.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">An experienced Alaska personal injury attorney can help evaluate your options and identify all available sources of recovery.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Alaska Uninsured Drivers – Alaska is an “at-fault” state. Consequently, every registered driver must have insurance coverage to pay for costs – in case they cause an accident. This system requires proving fault to determine who is responsible for the costs of the collision. This is very different from a no-fault state, where drivers use their own insurance for medical expenses regardless of who caused the accident. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-alaska-auto-insurance-requirements"><strong>Alaska Auto Insurance Requirements</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">First, it is important to understand Alaska’s minimum requirements for driver liability coverage. According to state law, every driver’s policy needs to fulfill the following amounts:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Property damage coverage up to $25,000</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Bodily injury or dead up to $50,000 for each person</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Bodily injury totaling $100,000 for multiple injured persons</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">These insurance minimums help offset medical bills and lost wages. However, additional financial issues also arise from car accidents. When an Alaska Uninsured Driver does not have this coverage, they have failed to fulfill a significant responsibility.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Unfortunately, despite the law, there is a significant percentage of Alaska drivers who are uninsured. In fact, the <a href="https://www.insurance-research.org/">Insurance Research Council</a> estimates that in 2023, more than one in seven U.S. drivers has no insurance. Moreover, more than one in six drivers (18.0 percent) were underinsured, according to the 2023 report. What happens, then, when an in Alaska uninsured driver causes an accident that hurts you? </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-what-if-i-m-hurt-by-an-alaska-uninsured-driver"><strong>What If I’m Hurt By An Alaska Uninsured Driver?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">If you are hurt by an Alaska uninsured driver, you have the option is to file a claim with your own insurance company. <a href="https://www.alaskainjuryclaims.com/blog/u-uim-protects-alaskans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">However, this option is only available to Alaskans who purchase uninsured motorist (UM) insurance or underinsured motorist (UIM)</a>. Not every driver has this kind of coverage. Even if you do, the proceeds awarded may not address all the costs associated with your injury.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-legal-action-against-an-at-fault-motorist"><strong>Legal Action Against An At-Fault Motorist</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">The final course of action for a motorist injured by an Alaska uninsured driver unable to recover from an insurance policy is a civil action. Filing a personal injury lawsuit against the at-fault driver may help address the financial strains stemming from your injury. </p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Are You Covered Alaska? Do you have enough auto insurance to protect you in case of a car accident? The summer season is upon us. Summer driving presents a unique set of challenges compared to other seasons. Protect yourself and your loved ones. It’s time for an <a href="https://www.alaskainjuryclaims.com/blog/insurance-review/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">auto insurance review</a>. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-minimum-auto-insurance-requirements-in-alaska"><strong>Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements In Alaska</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">The state of Alaska requires drivers carry liability insurance. <a href="https://dmv.alaska.gov/vehicle-services/mandatory-insurance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alaskan Law </a>states that drivers carry at least $50,000 of bodily injury coverage per person and $100,000 of bodily injury or <a href="https://www.commerce.alaska.gov/web/ins/Consumers/Auto/CoverageOptions.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Liability</a> coverage per accident. Drivers also must carry $25,000 in property damage protection.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Although Alaska has set <strong>minimum </strong>levels of auto insurance. Many crashes cause damages exceeding those minimum requirements. For example, a serious crash may result in long-term injuries. These kind of injuries may reduce a victim’s ability to earn a living and limit his or her quality of life. When this occurs, the injured person may need financial help beyond the at-fault driver’s policy limits. <strong>Our advice is to review your insurance and then buy as much Liability insurance coverage as you can afford</strong>.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-increase-your-insurance-protection"><strong>Increase Your Insurance Protection</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">ALL Auto Insurance Companies offer insurance coverage beyond Alaska’s minimum requirements. For example, Uninsured (UM), Under-Insured (UIM), Medical Payments and Umbrella Policies. These types of coverage are beyond the minimum and protect you in cases where damages exceed at-fault parties insurance available. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-proof-of-insurance-are-you-covered-alaska"><strong>Proof Of Insurance – Are You Covered Alaska?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Drivers must also carry <a href="https://www.dmv.org/insurance/how-to-obtain-proof-of-insurance.php" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">proof of insurance</a> at all times. Failure to provide proof of insurance may result in a license suspension. Cars may also be impounded for failure to provide proof of insurance. <p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Violators can lose their license until reaching a settlement with all parties in the crash. That means that having auto insurance is the easiest way to avoid losing a license for an extended period. It is also important to file claims so that uninsured drivers are held accountable to the law.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">The minimum requirement for liability auto insurance in the state is $25,000 property damage and $50,000/$100,000 for bodily injury or death. Personal injury claims, especially for multiple parties, often exceeds insurance minimums. It is important to buy more insurance when possible, instead of not having enough insurance coverage.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Failure to maintain the required auto insurance may lead to the suspension of your driver’s license.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">In the Municipality of Anchorage, if you are unable to provide proof of coverage, your vehicle may be impounded. In such instances, you would need to reach out to the Anchorage Police Department to learn about the procedures for retrieving your vehicle.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Uninsured underinsured auto insurance protects you if you are in an accident with someone who does not have enough insurance to cover damages. Further, the coverage you purchase allows peace of mind if you are in any accidents.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Nationally, around <a href="https://www.iii.org/fact-statistic/facts-statistics-uninsured-motorists" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">13% of drivers do not have insurance</a>. That equates to about one in eight drivers, a relatively high risk. If you get into a crash with an uninsured or underinsured individual, you would have to sue them personally for damages and injuries.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-uninsured-underinsured-auto-insurance"><strong>Uninsured Underinsured Auto Insurance</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">As the names suggest, Uninsured underinsured auto insurance applies to different situations. However, in each case, the other driver must be at fault. Uninsured coverage applies when the other driver does not have liability insurance. Underinsured coverage applies when the other driver does not have enough insurance to cover all damages from the accident.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">There are four kinds of uninsured underinsured motorist coverage:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-small-font-size">Uninsured motorist property damage;</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Uninsured motorist bodily injury;</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Underinsured motorist property damage; and</li>

<li class="has-small-font-size">Underinsured motorist bodily injury.</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-what-it-covers"><strong>What It Covers</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Uninsured underinsured auto insurance is referred to as U/UIM. This type of insurance usually provides coverage for you, your household members, those permitted to drive your vehicle, and passengers of your car. However, it’s always a good idea to check your policy to know who your plan covers. In fact, your insurance company can explain the coverage in detail so you know what to expect if you get into a crash.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Is it time to review your Uninsured underinsured auto insurance? Most of us buy our first automobile insurance when we are “young and poor.” Our interaction with an insurance sales agent goes something like this: “I have no money. Sell me the cheapest coverage you have to let me legally drive in Alaska.” As a result, insurance sales agents normally sell us “statutory minimum” &nbsp;“50/100” liability insurance. If we get really good advice, we also understand the value of and buy a matching 50/100 of U/UIM coverage. This U/UIM insurance provides us with <strong>minimal </strong>insurance when some drunk, uninsured driver takes us out while we are waiting for a red light to change.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-u-uim"><strong>U/UIM</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Uninsured underinsured auto insurance</strong> protects you (and all occupants of your vehicle and family members) when you are run over by an Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist – usually a drunk driver. If you (and your family) are badly hurt by an uninsured or underinsured motorist, this insurance stands in the place of the other driver and pays your claims, just as the other driver’s liability insurance would pay them … if the drunk had any insurance. It is staggering how many Uninsured Underinsured drivers we have on Alaskan roads. U/UIM is VERY important insurance for you and your family.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-small-font-size" id="h-statutory-minimum-is-not-enough"><strong>Statutory Minimum Is Not Enough</strong></h3>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Buy at least as much <strong>Uninsured underinsured auto insurance</strong> as you buy liability insurance. Consider buying more to better protect your family. This insurance coverage may be all that is available to address a lifetime of medical bills, unemployment and pain. We recommend at least 100/300 coverage or $100K per person, and $300K per accident. It is far better than 50/100, but it does not provide much beyond minimal protection. The next step up is 250/500 or $250K per person, and $500K per accident.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>IMPORTANT</strong>: U/UIM insurance is usually less expensive than liability insurance. It is not linearly priced. In other words, doubling your U/UIM coverage will usually NOT double your premium payment. It is smart to think: “How much is my life – and my family’s lives – worth?”</p>
