Halloween Safety Tips: Keep kids safe this Halloween in Alaska with practical trick-or-treating tips, visibility advice, and links to Halloween events in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Wasilla, and Juneau.

Alaska’s shorter daylight hours, colder temperatures, and icy conditions create additional challenges during Halloween celebrations. Learn more in our guide to Halloween in Alaska: History, Traditions, and Safety Tips, including tips for preventing pedestrian accidents and other seasonal injuries.

Halloween Safety Tips: Keeping Kids Safe on Halloween

Spooky season is an exciting time for children and families. From creative costumes to trick-or-treating and spooky activities, there are plenty of ways to celebrate. However, it is also important to take a few simple precautions to help keep children safe throughout the festivities.

Whether you plan to celebrate at home or head out for trick-or-treating, these Halloween safety tips can help your family enjoy a fun and safe holiday.

Halloween safety involves more than costumes and traffic awareness. Learn how to prevent injuries from icy walkways, fire hazards, decorations, and crowded gatherings in our guide to Halloween safety in Alaska.

Staying Home This Halloween?

Celebrating at home can be just as fun as heading out for Halloween. With a little creativity, and thought to Halloween safety you can create memorable activities for the whole family.

For example, organize a spooky scavenger hunt inside your home or in your yard. You could also host a Halloween movie night with homemade treats, decorate pumpkins, or plan a costume contest. If you invite neighborhood children to join the fun, make sure activities are supervised and appropriate for their ages.

The goal is simple: Find creative ways to celebrate while keeping children safe and having fun.

Keep Kids Safe Outside

As temperatures drop, snow and ice can make sidewalks and road crossings more hazardous. Review these Alaska winter walking safety tips to help your family prepare for slippery surfaces and reduced visibility.

According to the National Safety Council, children are more than twice as likely to be struck by a vehicle on Halloween than on other days of the year. Limited visibility, dark costumes, and increased pedestrian traffic can make Halloween especially dangerous for young trick-or-treaters.

If your children plan to trick-or-treat or attend Halloween events, follow these safety tips:

Accompany young children. An adult should accompany young children throughout the neighborhood. Older children who are ready to go without an adult should travel in groups, follow an agreed-upon route, and carry a charged cell phone.

Improve costume visibility. Add reflective tape or bright decorations to costumes, treat bags, and outerwear. Glow sticks or flashlights can also help children see and be seen.

Use sidewalks and crosswalks. Encourage children to walk on sidewalks whenever possible, cross at intersections, and look both ways before crossing the street. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing oncoming traffic and stay as far from the roadway as safely possible.

Choose safe costumes. Halloween safety starts well before October 31st. Make sure costumes fit properly to prevent trips and falls. Avoid masks or accessories that obstruct vision, and choose face paint when possible.

Inspect Halloween treats. Have children wait until they return home before eating their treats. An adult should check packaging for signs of tampering and review treats for potential food allergens.

Parents can help children stay safe throughout the fall and winter by reviewing Alaska child pedestrian safety tips, including how to cross streets safely, choose visible clothing, and navigate changing weather conditions.

Find Halloween Activities in Your Alaska Community

Looking for Halloween events and family-friendly activities in your Alaska community? Many towns offer seasonal celebrations, community festivals, trunk-or-treat events, costume contests, and other activities for children. Check local community calendars, libraries, recreation centers, and municipal websites for upcoming events and details. Before heading out, confirm event times, age recommendations, and any Halloween safety tip guidelines so your family can enjoy a fun and safe Halloween.

Explore local Halloween festivities and community events in Anchorage.

Find Halloween celebrations and family-friendly fun in Fairbanks.

Check out Halloween events and activities happening in Wasilla.

Halloween events and activities in Juneau.

Because Halloween activities often continue after dark, children should wear reflective clothing, carry a flashlight, and use well-lit routes. Read more about Alaska pedestrian safety at night to learn how to improve visibility when walking after dark.

Halloween Safety Tips For Drivers

Drivers also play an important role in keeping children safe. Children may dart into the street, cross between parked vehicles, or move unpredictably while trick-or-treating.

Slow down in residential neighborhoods, watch carefully for pedestrians, and pay particular attention near intersections, driveways, and parked cars. Keep your headlights on, eliminate distractions, and be prepared to stop suddenly.

If possible, avoid unnecessary driving during peak trick-or-treating hours. In Alaska, where daylight is limited in late October and weather conditions can change quickly, extra caution is especially important. Snow, ice, rain, and poor visibility can make it harder to see children and stop safely.

Drivers should slow down, watch for children near parked vehicles and intersections, and remain alert in low-light conditions. Our guide to driving safely around pedestrians in Alaska offers additional tips for recognizing pedestrians and preventing collisions.

Halloween should be a time for fun, not preventable injuries. With a little planning, attentive driving, and a few simple Halloween safety tips, families can enjoy a safer Halloween.

It’s Halloween! We love this time of year, but it brings unique dangers as well. On average, children are approximately twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than on any other day of the year. Practice Halloween Safety and protect our kids by driving even more safely on Halloween.

Improve Halloween Safety for everyone. Here are a few things to remember which help ensure a fun and safe Halloween:

Use your headlights and increase driver safety

Check your headlights. This is not the night you want your headlights to quit working. The streets are going to be full of people, and you need to be able to see them! Trick-or-treaters are much more likely to see you if you are shining your headlights (not your high beams – you don’t want to blind anyone). This is even more important in residential areas.

Turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances.

Turn on your headlights to make yourself more visible – even in the daylight.

Be especially alert for kids during trick-or-treating hours.

Avoid distracted driving

Increase Halloween Safety by avoiding distractions while driving, as distracted driving is the largest cause of motor vehicle accidents. Get rid of distractions in your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.

Put your cell phone away.

Reach for things only after you are safely stopped.

Save snacks for your destination.

Turn the radio down. We all love to jam out in the car. Halloween is a time when it’s critical for drivers to hear what’s going on around them. Turn the radio low enough to hear a car horn or someone yelling outside the car.

Drive even more carefully – for trick-or-treating kid safety

Obey all traffic signs and signals. Drive at least 5 miles per hour below than the posted speed limit. We don’t mean creep along way under the speed limit. We mean to drive slowly and keep a sharp lookout for kids. Especially if you’re in a residential area.

Children get very excited and don’t always pay attention before darting out in the road to cross the street. Drive slowly so you can respond more quickly, and yield to young pedestrians. Never assume that children can see you or that they are paying attention.

Be alert of your surroundings. Children are small, harder to see and take longer to cross the street than adults. Many could be wearing dark-colored costumes, so be on alert when driving.

Scan the road, especially at corners or crosswalks. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs. Broaden your scanning by looking for children left and right into yards and front porches.

Never pass cars stopped in the street on Halloween. They might be picking up or dropping off children. They might be stopped to allow children to cross.

Watch for children when passing parked cars. Children often cross the street behind or between parked cars.

Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully. Children have a harder time judging how a driver will react. They are more likely to think they have the okay to go ahead. Be careful backing out into a street.

Communicate with other drivers

Improve Halloween Safety by Using your hazards when pulling over to drop off or pick up children. This alerts drivers behind you to approach with caution. Use your turn signals when changing lanes or turning.

Avoid alcohol when driving

Never, ever drink and drive. Designate a sober driver or arrange a taxi if you’re celebrating with alcohol.

If you see a drunk or unsafe driver on the road, alert law enforcement. Get the license number and report it to the police. Alerting law enforcement to dangerous drivers could save a life on Halloween.

Take off your mask to increase driver safety

This may sound silly, but we’ve seen people driving on Halloween night in full costume, including masks. It may be fun to startle people by popping your masked head out of the car window. Driving with a mask way is dangerous. If you’re driving, never wear anything that restricts your field of vision.

Watch the weather and increase Halloween Safety

We have snow on the ground and more is falling throughout Alaska. This adds to all the driving hazards already out there. Keep an eye on the storms, for both trick-or-treating kid safety, overall Halloween Safety and for your own driver safety!
