Winter Weather Visibility – It’s every Alaskan’s responsibility to travel safely along Alaska roadways. Whether traveling as a pedestrian or in a vehicle, it’s important to remain visible when using Alaska’s roads. Consider different factors, such as possible weather and seasonal hazards, before walking or driving.

Pedestrian Visibility In Winter Weather

Pedestrians are difficult to see during darker days and increase winter weather safety by wearing bright, reflective clothing. Lighted vests, headlamps, or carrying a flashlight makes pedestrians more visible to drivers and others nearby. Increased visibility helps prevent accidents and keeps people safer along the roadway. Brightly colored clothing is more helpful in enhancing visibility when compared to dark or black clothing, even during daylight hours.

Vehicle Visibility

Before entering a roadway, be sure your headlights and other mandatory vehicle lights are working. During winter weather driving conditions with limited visibility, headlights and tail lights increase the likelihood of others seeing your vehicle. Keep your lights, windshield, windows, and mirrors clear of debris to maximize your visibility. Clean surfaces also help you see other drivers, pedestrians, and road hazards more clearly.

Consider Seasonal Factors

Weather hazards such as ice fog and heavy snow hinder visibility during winter months. It’s important to completely clear snow and ice from your vehicle before driving on a public roadway. Clearing your vehicle helps other drivers see you more clearly. It also prevents snow or ice from falling off your vehicle and creating a dangerous hazard for others on the road.

It’s important to increase your visibility, and whether others are visible to you, year-round, not just during winter weather. Summer presents the opposite concerns of winter weather. Extended daylight often decreases overall visibility during evening hours due to the sun’s position on the horizon. Additionally, there’s a potential for smoke pollution during summer months because of wildfires. Use your headlights during times of low visibility to increase the opportunity for others to see you, and for you to see others.

Reducing motor vehicle accidents, and injuries to Alaskans, is achievable through safer driving habits. If everyone on Alaska roads traveled carefully, maintained their vehicles, and continuously considered safety both for themselves and others, far less motor vehicle crashes and pedestrian injuries would occur during winter weather and all seasons.

Slow Down Alaska. Winter weather can cause extremely dangerous road conditions. In these frigid months, it is important to prepare yourself – and your vehicle – for any situation you may encounter. Whether it is ensuring that your vehicle has the proper tires for rough conditions or just slowing down in general, the following ice and snow driving safety tips may be helpful.

Be Prepared To Slow Down Alaska

Slow Down Alaska. It is much harder to control or stop your vehicle on a slick or snow-covered surface. Always remember that you are not the only one on the road. Avoid hard breaks and never speed into turns. Drivers must give snowplows, large trucks, and emergency vehicles even more space than normal.

Also, at the beginning of declining temperatures, drivers should ensure that they ready for the expected weather. Slow Down Alaska and inspect items such as tires, batteries, brakes, and headlights before getting on the road. Further, drivers should check that they have de-icing windshield wiper fluid, as well as effective wiper blades.

Lastly, prepare for an emergency. The temperatures during winter can drop to a staggering -40° F. If you are stranded in these temperatures it is of paramount importance that you have a well-stocked emergency kit in your vehicle. Items such as jumper cables, tow straps and flashlights are a definite must. In addition, all vehicles should have extra blankets and water, as well as tool and first aid kits.

When You Venture Out

Slow Down Alaska. Many experts, including AAA, advise to only be out on the roads when necessary. If you must go out, never leave without at least a half tank of gas. Drivers should always avoid using cruise control or cellular devices – stay alert.

In an emergency, whether an accident, or because your car stalled on the road, remember to stay calm. Call 911, AAA, or a tow truck as needed. Stay with your car, try not to overexert yourself and stay warm. Next, if you have any reflectors or hazard lights, ensure they are visible to passing driver. Finally, be very mindful of carbon monoxide poisoning; check that your exhaust pipe is clear of any obstructions and avoid running your car for long periods of time with the windows up.

If you must be out on the roads, please be safe, be prepared, be aware and Slow Down Alaska.

Winter Auto Safety – Alaska’s winter is already here. Auto safety through winter vehicle maintenance is a good idea. Extreme temperature changes can affect your car, so it’s important to make sure your car is in working order for winter driving. Stay safer on the road during the winter months with good winter auto safety habits. From basic tasks to those a mechanic should handle, here are a few auto safety tips to address as we face winter’s deep freeze.

Car Batteries And Winter Auto Safety

Your vehicle’s battery is especially hard hit when the temperatures drop. Cold temperatures reduce its cranking power. In fact, at 0° F, a battery has only about half the cranking power it has at 80° F. To check a conventional battery, remove the plastic caps on the top and check the fluid level. If the fluid is low, add distilled water. On maintenance-free batteries, check that the window at the top of the battery indicates a fully charged state. If it’s more than five years old and shows signs of weakness, replace the battery with a top-rated model.

You can have the battery professionally tested at a service station, auto parts store, or repair shop. A tired battery may just need to be charged. But if it’s defective or worn out, it’s best to replace it.

Wiper Blades

Wiper blades need replacing more often than you might think. Consumer Reports tests have found that even the best-performing wiper blades start to lose their effectiveness in as little as six months. Thus, winter auto safety means testing your wiper blades effectiveness. Streaks on the glass are signs that wiper blades need replaced. Consumer Reports recommends replacing wiper blades as often as twice per year. Most wiper blades are easy to install. In fact, some stores will replace wiper blades free.

Windshields and Lights

If you can’t see out the windows, you’re a danger to yourself and everyone on the road. If your lights are covered in ice and snow, other drivers can’t see you. Never rely on wiper blades to remove ice from the windshield. Instead, use an ice scraper on frosty mornings. If you park outside, place the wipers in the raised position when it’s going to snow overnight to keep them from freezing to the windshield. Winter auto safety requires clearing snow and ice from lights BEFORE driving.

Winter Auto Safety Kit

Carry a winter auto safety survival kit, including the following items:

Blankets or Sleeping Bags

Flashlight

Extra Batteries

First-Aid Kit

Medication

High-Calorie, Non-Perishable Food

Drinking Water

Change of Winter Clothing

Gloves, Hats, Socks

Sack of Sand or Cat Litter

Shovel

Windshield Scraper and Brush

Tool Kit

Knife

Tow Rope

Booster Cables

Tire Chains or Traction Mat

Water Container

Candles or Portable Campfire

Water-Proof Matches

Plastic Bags, Tissues and Paper Towels (for sanitary purposes) increase winter auto safety measures.

To sum up, winter vehicle prep is the best way to help avoid potential disasters later. Planning auto safety before getting behind the wheel ensures a safer winter driving season. Alaska’s winter is here. A little planning toward winter auto safety goes a long way to ensuring better living.

Winter Tires and Alaska – Preparing your vehicle for driving on Alaskan roadways during the winter is very important. There are a variety of winter tires that help with traction in cold, slippery road conditions. However, there are options besides classic all-season tires. Choosing the correct tires and accessories for winter driving increases safety for you and others while driving on Alaskan roads during colder months.

All Season Tires

Many people choose all-season tires and fasten chains on to increase traction for their vehicle. Tire chains improve grip. The combination works well because the chains dig into the ice and snow. Snow chains also help prevent skidding. It’s important to choose the right size and type of chains for your vehicle. Chains are easy to remove from tires when the roads are clear of snow and ice.

Different kinds of tires serve different purposes on the road. In Alaska, it is important to understand the difference between all-season tires and winter snow tires. Choosing the correct winter tires makes all the difference on Alaskan roads.

Snow Tires – Tread Rubber Compound

Tires are made of different types of rubber compound serving different purposes. Rubber compound retains inflation pressure, provides protection, and provides grip and traction. When comparing all-season tires to winter tires, the biggest difference is tread rubber compound.

Key Features:

Specially designed for cold temperatures (below 45°F or seven °C).

Unique rubber compounds remain flexible in freezing conditions.

Tread patterns with deep grooves and sipes for superior traction on snow and ice.

Enhanced braking and handling on icy roads.

Tread is made of rubber that provides grip and traction on roads. Tread rubber needs to be flexible to grip the road during winter months. Different rubber compounds hardens at different temperatures, reducing flexibility. Tread rubber compound in all-season tires hardens around 42 degrees. However, in winter snow tires, the rubber stays flexible below 42 degrees. During warmer temperatures, all-season tires stay hard, resisting wear and tear while winter tires stay soft and wear out faster. Thus the reason it is important to change tires seasonally.

Tread Pattern

In addition to tread rubber, the pattern of tread plays a role in providing traction. Winter tires are made with a tread pattern that pushes away snow and ice. All-season tires are made with a tread pattern that grips roads and pushes away water. Different road conditions and seasons call for different tread patterns.

Tire Pressure

As temperatures fluctuate, tire pressure also fluctuates. It is important to check winter tire pressure regularly. Tire pressure can be ok in the morning in the garage and then change in the afternoon after leaving your vehicle outside in the elements all day. Maintaining proper tire pressure ensures tires provide good traction when driving and extends the life of tires. It is a good practice to keep a tire gage in your vehicle.

Studded Winter Tires

Studded tires are ideal and commonly used in Alaska. Metal studs imbedded in the rubber of the winter tire create a studded tire. These metal studs dig into the ice. The studs also dig into pavement which can cause road damage.

Change All Tires

When updating tires for winter months, change all four tires on your vehicle. Switching only two tires may save money but this decision is actually more inefficient and much more dangerous.

It is important to understand that different seasons in Alaska calls for different kinds of tires. To sum up, winter tires help avoid potential disasters. Alaska’s winter is here. Planning goes a long way to ensuring better living through the cold, harsh months.

Winter Vehicle Prep – As Alaska rolls into winter, it’s time to prepare your vehicle for winter driving. Vehicle maintenance for every season is important. However, it’s especially important in winter. With dropping temperatures and falling snow, preparing your vehicle is a must.

Wiper Blades

A good set of wiper blades during the winter is ideal. Make checking and – if needed – replacing wiper blades part of your winter vehicle prep. Wiper blades crack and split over time, leading to slow squeaky blades which don’t perform well. When it snows, you want to make sure your wiper blades fully clear the snow off your windshield so you are able to see well while driving. Having streaks on your windshield is a sign your wiper blades need to be replaced. You may want to consider a more durable pair for Alaska’s harsher climate.

Winter Vehicle Prep: Tires

Placing a pair of sturdy winter tires on your vehicle is on of the most important things you can do during winter vehicle prep. Verify the area you live in allows the types of tires you plan to place on your vehicle. Winter tires provide extra traction and help with ice and snow buildup. Research your local city for shops that can assist with placing winter tires on your vehicle. Check local ordinances on how long you can keep the tires on.

Maintenance: Tire Pressure

Maintaining the appropriate tire pressure for your vehicle is imperative. Fill any tires that are low before driving. In cooler weather, tire pressure can fluctuate. If you park your vehicle in a garage and then start driving in the cold, you may notice it fluctuate. As part of winter vehicle prep, put an air compressor in your vehicle. You never know when you will need one.

Finally, update your emergency kit during winter vehicle prep to help keep occupants warm, dry and hydrated. If your vehicle breaks down or you get stuck in a storm, the supplies located in these kits will aid you until emergency responders arrive. Stay prepared so you can drive safely this winter season.

To sum up, winter vehicle prep is the best way to help avoid potential disasters later. Alaska winter is here. A little planning goes a long way to ensuring better living. Regardless of the season.

Winter Driving – Each year, with the onset of significant winter weather, the number of motor vehicle accidents increases. The arrival of winter with slippery, icy road conditions is predictable, however, the level of the driver’s training and skill in the car beside you or behind you is not. Thus, the importance of being an assertive, conscientious, safe driver while navigating Alaska’s roads is even more important.

Practice These Tips To Help Avoid Accidents

Frequently check your side and rear view mirrors for approaching vehicles;

If you are first in line at a red light, look before entering the intersection on the green light;

When stopping behind another vehicle allow plenty of time to slow down;

Brake gently and avoid sudden stops while winter driving;

When stopping behind a vehicle leave approximately 4 feet between vehicles (a good gauge is to stop while you can still see the rear tires of the vehicle ahead of you);

Follow posted speed limits – or – if road conditions or weather visibility warrant lower speeds, adjust accordingly;

Never speed while winter driving;

Do not engage in distracting activities (i.e. texting, eating, reading, etc.);

Remove snow off all vehicle windows and the hood before driving;

Avoid using cruise control and overdrive on icy roads;

Be extra cautious on bridges and shady spots – they are more prone to icy conditions;

Most importantly, always wear your seat belt.

Slow Down Alaska

Awareness and preparation increases Alaska Road Safety.

Lastly, be prepared for any emergency while winter driving. The temperatures during winter can drop to a staggering -40° F. If you are stranded in these temperatures it is of paramount importance that you have a well-stocked emergency kit in your vehicle. Items such as jumper cables, tow straps and flashlights are a definite must. Also, all vehicles should have extra blankets and water, as well as both tool and first aid kits.

We hope you and yours enjoy the beautiful snow and the outdoor activities associated with this winter driving season. May you have a fun and safe winter, free of accidents and injuries.

Car Restraints – use them correctly for Alaska’s children. Alaskan parents may be unaware that the National Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) lists car accidents as a leading cause of death for children. Many of these deaths are preventable with the proper use of car seats or car restraint systems. Sadly, parents often use the wrong type of car seat or do not use car restraints properly.

Alaskan Regulations On Car Restraints and Car Seats

The State of Alaska (SOA) regulates seat belt and child seat/ car seat use for children under Alaska Statute 28.05.095. Use of Seat Belts and Child Safety Devices Required. While the SOA does not require children to use back seats only, Alaskan regulation does require that car seats or restraints must be in place and used properly.

In plain language:

Infants 1-year-old or younger must be in a rear-facing child seat.

Toddlers 4 years or younger must use a child restraint.

Children between 4 to 15 years of age or shorter than 57 inches must use a booster seat.

Failure to Follow Alaska Regulations

The CDC found that 72 percent of booster seats in vehicles were installed or used improperly. Errors during installation and use could cause harm to a child in a motor vehicle crash. Consequently, absent a crash, adults who fail to follow state-mandated child restraint regulations face fines. Therefore, the CDC encourages parents to follow state regulations and ensure car seats, booster seats, and child restraints are used correctly.

Even correctly installed car seats and properly used car restraint systems may not prevent serious injuries to a child in an auto accident. When a child is injured in a motor vehicle crash, the child’s family should file a claim.
Fall Into Winter – Alaska Road Safety: Changing weather conditions in Alaska make driving more dangerous than in most states, especially at this time of year. Alaskan roads may be dry, debris-covered, wet, snowy, icy or any combination of these on any given day. In addition, certain conditions make roads even more dangerous. For example, the angle of the sun and lack of light as Alaska heads into winter affects visibility. Driving habits must accommodate changing road conditions. Johnson Law offers you some tips to improve Alaska Road Safety.

In addition, many roads throughout the state present unique challenges. Alaskan roads, including the Sterling Highway and Seward Highway, present risks at higher levels.

Fall Into Winter Visibility

Before driving, check all exterior lights on your vehicle. Ensure windshield wipers are in good condition and your car is properly maintained. As Alaska rolls from fall into winter, we often travel in darker conditions with less hours of sunlight this time of year. With the sun lower in the sky, the intense glare often obscures our vision in the mornings and afternoons. Always drive with sunglasses handy.

Prepare Your Car For Winter Before Holiday Travel

Vigilance and general maintenance greatly reduces the odds of breaking down as Alaskans go from fall into winter, having an accident or some other unwanted event while driving. Before driving, check windshield washer fluid, clean windows (inside and out), and properly adjust those mirrors. In addition to annual maintenance, here are some tips to winterize your car for increased Alaska Road Safety:

Test the battery; battery power drops as the temperature drops;

Make sure the cooling system is in good working order;

As we move from fall into winter, tires with a deeper, more flexible tread are critical;

If using all-season tires, check the tread on your tires and replace if less than 2/32 of an inch for greater Alaska Road Safety;

Check the tire pressure; tire pressure drops as the temperature drops;

Check wiper blades and replace if needed;

Add wiper fluid rated for -30 degrees;

Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze this is especially important as we go from fall into winter; and

Keep your car’s emergency preparedness kit fully stocked.

The Seward Highway is one of America’s most beautiful, yet dangerous highways. Its winding, two-lane layout, unpredictable weather, and heavy tourist traffic create hazards for drivers. A 127-mile National Scenic Byway and All-American Road in Alaska, the Seward Highway connects Anchorage to the city of Seward via the Kenai Peninsula.

Dangers Of The Seward Highway

Road layout: The Seward Highway is filled with sharp curves, steep grades, and areas of limited visibility, particularly along the Turnagain Arm where the road is squeezed between mountains and the ocean. In some places, there are steep drop-offs with no guardrails.

Weather: Weather changes quickly and dramatically, even during summer months. Unexpected weather, freezing temperatures, ice, hail, and snow make driving the Seward Highway hazardous. In winter months, avalanches often close the highway for extended periods.

Traffic: A popular tourist route, the Seward Highway sees heavy traffic during the summer, including large commercial trucks and RVs. Distracted drivers stopping to look at scenery or wildlife often congest traffic, causing accidents. Impatient drivers also cause head-on collisions while passing other vehicles.

Wildlife: Encounters with animals such as moose, bears, and Dahl sheep are common, especially at dawn and dusk. Striking an animal may cause a serious accident and injuries.

Natural hazards: Rockfalls and ice near areas like Beluga Point pose serious threats for drivers.

Safety Tips For Alaska’s Drivers

Watch for wildlife: Slow down and be vigilant in areas with wildlife crossing signs, especially while driving in the dawn and dusk hours.

Be patient: Avoid passing slower vehicles along the Seward Highway, especially on blind curves. Only stop using designated pull-outs.

Stay alert: Pay close attention to the road, maintain awareness of your surroundings, and avoid distractions

Check conditions in advance: Always check the latest road and weather conditions along the Seward Highway via the 511.alaska.gov traveler information system before you leave.

Be prepared: Consider carrying extra water, blankets, and gas, especially during winter travel.

Consult An Alaska Personal Injury Attorney After An Accident

After a serious auto accident on the Seward Highway, some insurance adjusters will make a policy limits settlement offer but only under one layer of coverage, when multiple layers may be available. I have found this to be true in too many situations. Clients approach me to discuss initial policy limits settlement offers. When, in reality, a thorough facts and insurance policy review, reveals additional coverage and better financial recovery for the victims and their families.

Another consideration, semi-trucks involvement in Seward Highway accidents, may open up product liability and/or maintenance liability claims associated with the truck or its manufacturer. This claims expose additional sources of compensation for victims and families of those injured in vehicle collisions.

Autumn Vehicle Care – Regular vehicle maintenance is a key factor to driving safely in Alaska. Prepare your car for the change of season before the weather turns really cold. For those experiencing they first Alaskan winter, check your vehicle now and confirm it’s winterized.

Getting Started At Home

Autumn vehicle care starts at home. Be sure your defroster and heaters are working well. Alaska’s winters are cold. If it takes a long time to warm up your car, you may want to make an appointment to have your heating system repaired.

Wiper blades wear down over time and may need replacing after so much use during the rainy summer Alaska had this year. Replace wiper blades that streak, smear, or squeak.

Check levels of wiper fluid, engine oil, transmission fluid, and coolant. Refill low fluids using the appropriate thickness and mixtures for cooler temperatures.

Finally, check under your hood for any signs of wear or damage. Check for frayed belts, brittle hoses, and cracks or leaks. Also, be sure the battery and electrical systems are in good working order as part of your autumn vehicle care.

Schedule Professional Maintenance

Sometimes autumn vehicle care is more complex than the average person’s skill levels. Schedule an appointment to have winter tires put on your vehicle as soon as possible. Consider local laws and weather forecasts prior to scheduling your tire change. Some places only allow studded tires during a specific time because of their potential to damage roadways. Minimally, be sure the air pressure in your tires is safe for colder weather and icy roads.

Always hire a professional for recommended 30/60/90 maintenance. Furthermore, make an appointment for potential problems such as dashboard warning lights, strange noises, and steering or brake issues. Additionally, complex issues like transmission, internal engine works, and electrical system malfunctions require specialized knowledge and tools that only a professional mechanic can provide.

Car Maintenance For A Safer Alaska

Help keep yourself and others safe on the road this season by winterizing your vehicle as part of your autumn vehicle care . A few extra tasks could help save you from an accident, auto damage and a costly insurance claim.

Autumn Driving In Alaska – Alaska’s Autumn is here and drivers need to adapt with the change of season and be cautious on roadways during autumn. To increase overall safety when traveling on Alaskan roads in the fall – SLOW DOWN. Look for hazards, drive slowly, and keep your vehicle properly maintained for the season.

Drive Slowly Through School Zones

While school has been in session for the past weeks across Alaska, there are still continual adjustments being made in transporting children to and from school. Be cautious when driving through school zones. Autumn driving in Alaska includes additional responsibilities. Be extremely careful when approaching a school bus and always stop when the stop sign is displayed and red lights are flashing.

Look For Hazards

Unexpected hazards such as fallen trees, loose pets, or wildlife can be dangerous to drivers when autumn driving in Alaska. Fallen leaves covering a roadway can be very hazardous. Obstacles such as potholes or road damage can be hidden from view. Leaves and fallen branches can create obstacles for pedestrians and cyclists as well, which in turn could cause them to stray from their path.

Maintain Your Vehicle For Autumn Driving In Alaska

It’s incredibly important to be sure your vehicle is maintained properly for all seasons, including autumn driving in Alaska. Ensure all headlights are in proper working order before driving. Be extra cautious when driving during hours with limited daylight.

Tire pressure is often impacted when the temperature drops. Check your tire pressure often during colder months. Maintaining proper tire pressure ensures tires provide good traction when autumn driving in Alaska and extends the life of tires.

It’s also important to check fluid levels and electrical connections for autumn driving in Alaska. If you’re not comfortable or confident in checking your battery charge and connection it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment with a trusted mechanic before the temperature regularly drops below freezing.

Alaska Autumn Is Here – Fall has firmly planted itself in Alaska with winter approaching. Changing seasons mean drivers need to adjust and employ fall safety precautions while on Alaskan roads. SLOW DOWN for safer fall driving. Keep your vehicle well-maintained for changing weather.

Adjust For The Sun During Alaska Autumn

When leaving indoors, allow your eyes to adjust for a few minutes before jumping behind the wheel. As Alaska heads toward the autumnal equinox, we lose daylight daily and eyes need time to adjust after leaving home or work. Additionally, consider sun glare while driving. The sun aligns with roadways during sunrise and sunset this time of year and can make it harder to see. Additionally, sunlight reflects off frost and ice causing blurred or lost vision.

The Days Are Shorter

During the Alaska Autumn, our days get shorter, you may find yourself driving to and from work in the dark. Drive more safely by keeping your headlights clean and in proper working order; dim or misaligned headlights can decrease your visibility. Watch for pedestrians walking, jogging or biking. They may be difficult to see in dusky light. Be mindful of children walking to and from bus stops in the morning and afternoon. Fall is also an active breeding time for moose and caribou – SLOW DOWN for safer fall driving.

Caution – Wet Road Ahead

Alaska Autumn means rainstorms, causing slippery roads. Hydroplaning is a concern during the fall season and can be avoided with increased caution. Additionally, wet leaves might be just as slippery as ice. Never stop on wet leaves, drive slowly through piles of leaves and avoid hard braking when possible. Pay attention to the edge of the road to avoid obstructions that may be hidden by leaves. Stay alert – Alaskan roads often have sudden dangerous drop offs hidden by road debris. SLOW DOWN for safer fall driving.

Road Conditions Change Rapidly During Alaska Autumn

Increases in moisture and low overnight temperatures can cause a buildup of frost, making roads more dangerous. Bridges and narrow roads are at greater risk of icy buildup. Stay alert and SLOW DOWN to avoid an accident caused by ice buildup. It is harder to see ice on bridges, especially when combined with wet leaves.

Finally, falling branches or trees are a major concern during Alaska autumn and winter months. Alaska has many roads with low travel patterns and branches laying on the roadway for long periods of time is not uncommon. Use caution when traveling a new traffic patterns, watch for fallen trees or branches.

Fall is a beautiful time of year, especially during Alaska Autumn. SLOW DOWN for safer fall driving. Enjoy the scenery and stay safer on the roads this season.

Alaska Commercial Trucking – When a passenger vehicle and a commercial truck collide, the results are often catastrophic. A small passenger vehicle is no match for large, heavy, commercial truck. Unfortunately, spinal injuries, paralysis, and death are far too common in these accidents.

Commercial Trucking Accident Statistics

Federal and state regulators realize the risk that large commercial vehicles pose. Accordingly, strict laws are in place to try to minimize accidents. Despite efforts to make the roadways safer, 4,354 people died in commercial trucking accidents in 2023, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.<span data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":150,"335559740":240}">

Common Causes Of Trucking Accidents

It is important to understand common causes of Alaska commercial trucking accidents and to be alert while on the roads.

Oil spills and tanker truck accidents – Fuel spills occur in places such as the Dalton Highway, a remote 400-mile haul road which stretches to many of the state’s oil fields. Warming winters, roads that need maintenance, and human error contributes to Alaska commercial trucking accidents.

Driver fatigue – Drivers are typically paid by the load and receive incentives to transport material faster. As a result, many commercial trucking companies violate federal regulations involving service hours and allow tired drivers to be on the roads.

Distracted driving – The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration bans commercial drivers from texting while driving. Commercial drivers must often find ways to entertain themselves during long hauls and sometimes need to communicate load arrival times with receiving locations. Both scenarios can result in phone distractions.

Improper weight distribution – Improperly loaded trucks may tip over and cause an accident on the road.

Equipment malfunction – Commercial trucking companies are required to maintain their vehicles in safe repair. However, a malfunction can result in a deadly Alaska commercial trucking accident.<span data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":150,"335559740":240}">

If you suffer injuries or a loved one dies in an Alaska Commercial Trucking accident, contact an reputable Alaska personal injury attorney.
Alaska Motorcycle Safety – According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, recent data shows motorcyclists are about 28 times as likely to die in a motor vehicle crash compared to passenger car occupants. Safe motorcycling requires balance, coordination, and good judgment.

Alaska Motorcycle Safety – Learn To Ride

Learning Alaska Motorcycle Safety is crucial due to unique challenges like climate, varying road conditions, and increased visibility issues. Safety courses teach essential skills like cornering, swerving, and braking to avoid accidents, as well as the importance of proper gear and visibility. These skills are vital for both new and experienced riders to stay safe on Alaskan roads.

Alaska Motorcycle Safety Courses are offered in most cities and towns. For example:

Anchorage: A.B.A.T.E. Rider Education Program

Find the Alaska Motorcycle Safety course in your area.

Motorcycling Safety Tips

Wear A Helmet:

If you’re ever in a serious motorcycle crash, the best hope for protecting your brain is wearing a helmet. Alaska Motorcycle Safety includes always wearing a helmet meeting the Code of Federal Regulations Standard No. 218. Look for the DOT symbol on the outside back of the helmet.

Body Coverage:

When riding a motorcycle, completely cover your arms and leg for greater Alaska Motorcycle Safety. Wearing heavy denim or leather would be ideal for protecting your arms and legs. Boots or shoes should cover your ankles. Gloves allow for a better grip and help protect your hands in the event of a crash.

Motorcycle Visibility:

Wearing brightly colored clothing with reflective material will make you more visible to other vehicle drivers increasing your Alaska Motorcycle Safety. Apply reflective materials to your motorcycle and keeping your motorcycle’s headlights on at all times, even using high beams during the day to increase visibility.

Motorcycle Pre-Trip Inspections:

Check your motorcycle’s tire pressure and tread depth; hand and foot brakes; headlights and signal indicators; and fluid levels before you ride. You should also check under the motorcycle for signs of oil or gas leaks. Adjust the suspension and tire pressure ensuring the load is balanced to accommodate extra cargo weight. This improves Alaska Motorcycle Safety and ensure the trip is more enjoyable.

Motorcycle Passenger Safety:

To ensure Alaska Motorcycle Safety for passengers, both the driver and passenger need to prioritize safety gear, communication, and proper riding techniques. This includes wearing appropriate protective gear, understanding how to mount and dismount safely, maintaining a stable position on the bike, and communicating effectively. Passengers should mount the bike only after the engine has been started, sitting as far forward as possible. Remind passengers to keep both feet on foot rests at all times and to be wary of the muffler.

An individual injured in a motor vehicle crash through the fault of another driver may be entitled to compensation. Call an experienced Alaska personal injury attorney today to understand your rights after an Alaska motorcycle accident injury case.

Holding drivers accountable for accidents is a key step to a better Alaska. Accidents caused by motorists who are not insured or do not have enough insurance is a problem faced by too many Alaskan victims. Consequently, the injured party must turn to their own insurance for coverage or to sue the at-fault party. As a victim, it is your right to know whether or not the other party has insurance, so you can file a claim.

Some Alaskans want to avoid causing trouble for others and steer clear of conflict. Do not be that person. Deciding against pursuing your rights hurts not only you but also other Alaskans. The person responsible for injuries and damages should be held accountable for their actions. Holding drivers accountable makes Alaska a safer state.

What Does Holding Drivers Accountable Mean?

As the victim of a collision, your primary job is to work toward healing. You should not have to worry about paying for your injuries or repairs to your vehicle. The other party is responsible, so that person should cover your losses. Holding drivers accountable is important. If necessary, victims may have to sue the at-fault party directly for additional losses beyond insurance.

If you have concerns about holding another driver accountable for your damages, talk to an experienced Alaska personal injury attorney about filing a claim on your behalf. While you focus on recovery, your attorney will handle the legal aspects of your case. This is the best way to handle a claim for severe injuries. A good Alaska personal injury attorney will assist with settlement decisions and claim details.

Accountability Makes Alaska Safer

In fact, holding drivers accountable is crucial in Alaska for ensuring responsible use of public resources. It is important to exercise your legal rights and hold others accountable for negligent or unlawful actions. Holding negligent parties accountable protects others from becoming victims later.

Accountability helps ensure that individuals and organizations adopt better behavior and make better decisions. Holding drivers accountable for negligence provides a clear understanding of expectations and consequences. This reduces the likelihood of poor choices throughout Alaska.

Alaska Travel on Independence Day – In Alaska – as well as across the United States – July 4th weekend is referred to as the Fourth of July or Independence Day weekend. The Fourth of July specifically commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Celebrations include a variety of events and activities across our beautiful state, with each Alaskan community putting its own unique spin on the festivities.

Holiday Travel Tends To Be Dangerous

Studies present mixed findings in identifying the most dangerous day of the year to drive. One thing is certain however, Alaska travel on Independence Day is among the most dangerous days of the year to be on the road. While it is wise to stay off the roads on July 4th, traveling for many is going to happen. If you find yourself traveling, use extra caution.

Alaska Travel And Independence Day

Independence Day weekend expects to be busy for road travel, with heavy traffic predicted, particularly on Wednesday, July 2nd, and Sunday, July 6th. Traffic delays are likely, especially for traveler leaving after 11 a.m. Use good judgment for Alaska travel during Independence Day weekend.

Much Alaska travel on Independence Day stems from Alaskans enjoying a long weekend during which they don’t have to work. Many people travel to visit friends and family or to attend Independence Day celebrations. Additional people on the roadways for July 4th changes normal traffic patterns and causes traffic during unexpected times of the day. Give yourself extra time to reach your destination and avoid stressful, frustrating situations.

Alcohol Consumption

Alaska Travel on Independence Day and alcohol are a poor combination. Unfortunately, too many people consume more alcohol than usual during July 4th celebrations, causing drinking and driving to be a bigger concern. The increase in alcohol consumption means it is up every Alaskan to practice caution while on the roads. Watch for intoxicated drivers and report those drivers to the local police agency.

An accident during Alaska travel over the Independence Day weekend may result in an incredibly high cost. You or a loved one may end up in the hospital with injuries. You could be delayed getting back to work and lose wages. For all of these things and more, talk to an experienced Alaskan Injury Attorney to discuss your right to compensation. Johnson Law wishes you and yours a safe Independence Day weekend.

Just as with distracted driving, the culprit for distracted walking is often cell phone use. When you are using your cell phone, you aren’t paying attention to your surroundings – putting both yourself and others at risk. The most recent statistics show:

In 2019, an estimated 7,668 pedestrians died in traffic and non-traffic incidents, with 6,205 of those killed in traffic crashes on public roads.

The Midnight Sun Festival, Alaska’s largest single-day event, is held annually in Fairbanks. This year it occurs on June 21st. Because thousands of people attend the free 12-hour street fair, 1st and 2nd Avenues are closed to vehicular traffic. Exhibitors offer Alaskan merchandise along with local food and services. There is even live music and gold panning. Unfortunately, it is also a time when pedestrians are so engaged with their surroundings, they are always careful. Get a feel for how the vehicle handles and drives before you start your trip. Be aware of Alaska’s road laws and regulations that apply along your route.

Insurance and Road Service

Make sure your insurance covers every aspect of your Alaska Summer Road Trip. Be sure to research road services that specialize in recreational vehicles. Only a few road service companies will tow the trailer, too. You don’t want to leave all of your possessions in a trailer on the side of the road. Before getting on the road, ask: “Am I covered?“

Does your auto insurance cover your trailer?

Does your motorhome policy cover your towed vehicle?

Do you need separate RV insurance or road service coverage?

Will your insurance cover towing your motorhome, your truck, AND trailer, or will they leave your trailer behind?

How far will they tow you?

Before the Alaska Summer Road Trip

Alaska Summer Road Trips, adventure and safety go hand-in-hand.

Complete a full safety check to ensure the vehicle is travel-ready before leaving for your Alaska Summer Road Trip and between each leg of the trip. First, make a specific checklist and review it thoroughly to be assured everything is in its place. Second, ensure no doors or awnings have been left unlatched. Third, retract any steps and stabilizing jacks. Finally, if you are towing a car, check the tow bar and secure the safety cables.

Look under the vehicle for fluid leaks and monitor coolant level, engine oil and transmission fluid. Likewise, make sure the parking brake, air brakes and tow brakes are working properly. Check tire inflation levels and tread, including the spare, before hitting the road. Balance weight throughout a recreational vehicle to lessen the possibility of tipping. Plan water and waste stops along the way to reduce the vehicle’s weight on the road. Blown tires, height clearance mistakes, and overloading are the leading causes of recreational vehicle accidents during Alaska Summer Road Trips.

Alaska Summer Driving and Kids – A right of passage for many children is finally being “big enough to ride in the front.” At the same time, airbags can seriously injure or kill young children riding in the front seat. Keep children in approved car seats as long as they are under the recommended age and sizes. Alaska Summer Driving With Kids and car seat safety go hand-in-hand.

Keep Small Children Out Of Front Seats

Increase safety when Alaska Summer Driving With Kids. Avoid encouraging the front seat as a right of passage. Until the child is of sufficient size and weight, the safest place for your child is the center back seat. Also, use an appropriate car seat or booster that actually fits your child. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cites motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of death among children. Further, CDC studies show that car seats reduce risk of injury in a crash up to 82 percent compared with seat belt use alone.

Alaskan Law Regulates Car Seat Safety

AS 28.05.095 Use of Seat Belts and Child Safety Devices Required outlines the requirements for seat belt and car seat use in Alaska regardless of the vehicle occupant’s age.

Senate Bill No. 218 An Act Relating to Use of Child Safety Seats and Seat Belts defines changes to AS 28.05.095 to more clearly outline car seat requirements which keep our children safer.

Alaska Summer Driving With Kids and Car Seat Safety

Increase safety when Alaska Summer Driving With Kids. Read the manufacturer’s instructions and follow them completely, every time you put your child in a car seat. Before securing your child in a car seat, install it correctly.

Rear-facing car seats should be used for infants and children weighing 20 pounds or less. The chest straps should not have slack and the chest clip should be at the child’s chest, not their stomach. Remove blankets and jackets before clipping a child into a car seat to prevent space between the straps and child. This improves the safety and overall enjoyment of Alaska Summer Driving with kids

Children over 20 pounds and a year or more in age should use a five point harness. Keeping a child rear-facing is safer for their head, neck, and spine. However, once a child exceeds the maximum weight for a baby seat, the seat doesn’t protect the child against an impact to the same degree.

Children over four years old, less than 57 inches (4’9″) tall and under 65 pounds should be secured in a booster seat. Ensure the seatbelt crosses the child’s lap and rests along their shoulder, not their neck, chest, or stomach. A child may use a seat belt once over four years of age and exceeding the requirements of booster seats.

Enjoy Alaska Summer Driving With Kids

Alaska Summer Driving With Kids and car seat safety go hand-in-hand. Keep your children as safe as possible each time you drive with them in your vehicle.
Alaska Summer Driving brings unique dangers for Alaska’s drivers. When drivers fail to slow down, pay attention, and avoid these dangers, it significantly increases the likelihood of an automobile accident. Johnson Law offers these helpful reminders for safer travel during our beautiful Alaskan summers:

Alaska Summer Driving and Cell Phones

The use of cell phones while driving increases the chances of an accident. This is especially true when dealing with Alaska Summer Driving weather and lighting conditions which affect Alaskan roadways. It is essential for you and other drivers on the road not to be distracted by cellphone usage. Texting or reading text messages while driving is both extremely dangerous and a leading cause of accidents.<span data-ccp-props="{"134233117":true,"134233118":true,"201341983":0,"335559739":150,"335559740":240}">

Using GPS for Alaska Summer Driving

A common hazard that doesn’t occur to people is using a GPS. Many people believe GPS is an excellent convenience while operating a motor vehicle; however, it can be dangerous. Drivers need to be conscious of their actions and pull over when needed. Especially when setting the GPS or when trying to understand its directions while Alaska Summer Driving. One distraction is one too many.<span data-ccp-props="{"134233117":true,"134233118":true,"201341983":0,"335559739":150,"335559740":240}">

When operating a motor vehicle anytime, especially while Alaska Summer Driving, it is essential to be aware that animals sometimes find their way into the road. This means that it is crucial for drivers to always drive at safe speeds and keep their eyes on the road to have time to react appropriately if an incident like this were to occur.<span data-ccp-props="{"134233117":true,"134233118":true,"201341983":0,"335559739":150,"335559740":240}">

Weather conditions in Alaska can make operating a motor vehicle even more dangerous than in some other states. Some Alaska roads can be covered with ice – even in the summer. In addition, certain geographic conditions make roads even more dangerous. For example, the angle of the midnight sun in the summer affects visibility. Below are four simple rules to increase Alaska Summer Driving safety:
